Disable the tire pressure sensors?

I'm hoping for someone very knowledgeable here...

From the owner's manual, there's no information about turning the TPMS system off. Just info about when a tire is low and what the warnings will look like.

My question is this - if I decide that I do not want to use the TPMS system, can I turn it off and just run whatever wheels/tires I want? Or will the car be warning and bonging for eternity?

Hush. I stand by the Hypocritic Oath. Hell, I said I'd never buy a 2008 Lancer and here I am!
And I also blame RRM for making too much cool ****.

Back on topic, I'd also like to know because the sensors cost $200 and I'm sure having them set to my car's frequency won't be free. So when I need to replace the stock tires (or when the sensor batteries die), I'm really not interested in shelling out half a paycheck for TPMS. I have a pressure gauge, I can do it perfectly fine on my own.

Also, I like autocrossing, so I wouldn't mind having a set of race rubber for the occasional weekend conefest.

yeah the tps are ridiculous in price and then to have them put on...no thanks. I'm good as long as the display doesnt annoy the $$$% out of me too badly by constantly displaying a message. Wait what am I talking about...I said I'd never by wheels and tires for this thing.....crap.

I spoke with my dealership and the guy told me it will do nothing wrong to the car at all.. the only thing that will happen is on your dash board a signal that you have bad tire pressure will occur and it will not continue to ring

I was just thinking because i have ran into the same problem of not wanting to pay $82 per sensor at the dealer and then getting them set to the car for another 80. I was thinking if the display isn't going to beep everytime or show anything and it is just the warning light. Why not take out the guage cluster and pull out the bulb for the tpms then you wont have a annoying light and no one will be able to tell the difference. I know this is an old thread but i know people are still trying to solve this problem and i havent checked out if its possible on this car to just pull a bulb but i know it would of worked on my old car which was an eclipse.

The tire pressure warning is part of the digital display on the instrument cluster, so pulling a bulb won't do it. You should be able to use different wheels and tires, but the sensors will have to be reset.

You can run wheels and not use the tps.. It just pulls up Every time you start the car.. then after about 10 seconds you have to hold the Info button til it goes away, then every time you open the door it reminds you again.. Every time. I went for about 4 days when my rims were off getting powder coated and I wanted to shoot someone... But maybe that's just me. (Don't do it)

yo thanks elvis for letting me know that because from what i understood bigd said was that nothing would show up on the display and only the light would show up which turns on every time you start the car in the bottom right.(Right at the top on the right side of the display there is a tire with a !) I thought that would be the only thing that would constantly show up, thats why i was thinking i might just be able to pull the bulb. but if the thing beeps and shows up on the display then i think i might just have to shell out the extra money for those stupid sensors. At $82.75 per sensor plus i was told $80 to program them that runs like 460 with tax just so that i dont go crazy. but i figure if i'm gonna have the car for a good 5 years then i might as well.

Tirerack can set you up all 4 for something like $186.00. if you buy a wheel + tire package from them they mount the sensors and tire for you. I assume that at that point all you have to do is put the wheels on your car.

But then you still have to pay to program them.

Take the sensors off your stock wheels, put them into one of those refillable/rechargable "aeresol" containers, fill it to around 32 psi, and throw it in your trunk?

It's worth a shot, given the massive annoyance that they create when not installed...
