IX Drivetrain w/ Tre Rear Diff vs. X's S-AWC

I saw a post for this in another thread, and I was wondering if anyone had any input on it..

Has anyone driven the two to note what kind of differences there are? I'm sure the X's system is much more sophisticated, but I'm wondering if Tre's upgrade makes the IX set up feel similar? I have read that it makes the car rotate much better, but I was hoping for some input on any similarities/differences in the feel of the cars.

I posted this in another forum but I thought I'd get better response if I tried here!

Yeah, I went from a 9 to a 10. What I noticed from comparing the two, was the 9 pushed the front whenever it could, and the 10 will track track track, then step the rear out a little, and hold it there. I personally like to steer with the back-end, and most definitely would rather have the back step out, rather than have the front plow like a *****. With the 10, you can keep steering and keep the throttle on with the back stepped out, but with the front pushing with the prior gens, you're SOL until it hooks up.
As far as the differences is the systems on board, the 10 with S-AWC variates power or brake to all the wheels depending on what the ECU reads the car's attitude as being. The 8 and 9 only modulate power to the front and back end. My 10 just plain out handles my 9. Stock to stock, and with the 9 having all the voo-doo suspension, including Motons, compared the the 10 only having a set of JICs (Muellerized) The 10 gives me the impression that it will react and do what I want it to do, without very much effort. It's like I develop the thought, muscle memory works the controls, and I'm only having to think about what I'm gonna do next. If I want it to hook up, it does. If I want it to step the rear out to square off a corner, it will. It all translates to really quick lap times, and the funny thing is, it's only riding on (the aforementioned) JICs. No bigger sway(s), bushings...nothing. Just the shocks and camber.
I'm sure others (With the prior gens) will disagree with what I wrote, but I'm beyond convinced, and since I own one, that's the only thing that matters to me.

So you did have the tre rear diff, or not? I'm confused, because what you seem to be describing is a standard IX, and I heard that the tre rear diff eliminates that. The description of the Tre rear diff had me thinking that the end result of it would be that it would be doing something similar, although much less complex, than the X's s-awc (I know its not controlling the power side to side etc, just the final end result in corners).
So I was wondering how the two of them comparably felt, if the IX had this tre rear diff. If you didn't, it's kind of moot point because yeah no matter what suspension etc., for the most part the IX will plow.

In terms of the X's S-awc, rather than make things directly faster though, I think a lot of it is it makes things easier: it allows you to have a very very controlled throttle induced oversteer, which is basically what you can get in a rwd car.. Only easier as the computer helps with much of the control. In the end, this does make things faster through the corners, but that's not exactly what I'm looking for.

From what you can read on older posts on this thread, the SCCA guys, CJ and others, solved the plow problem with the TRE diff. Me personally i'd rather go with the TRE diff simply because the Sawc does so much it takes away from the driver.

Yea, I did read that it eliminates pretty much all understeer, and creates oversteer, even to the point where you may need to counter steer on the exit of the corner.
I was just wondering how it felt/how effective it was compared to the X's 4wd system.

well for one thing, in a slalom type S, the IX with the TRE won't assume you're initiating a long sweeper and throw the rear end way out.

I would prefer a car that didn't assume it knew what i wanted... kind of like the way Microsoft Office does.

I hate that paperclip guy...

I've got a stock IX and have been tempted a few times to get the TRE; nothing but positive feedback about it.

For more answers, simply look at BlackTrack's thread below about Super Lap Battle. He replaced his S-AWC diff with a mechanical Cusco and is claiming much better handling on power, and I would probably agree, simply because I would imagine that the S-AWC diff is a lot less aggressive than an aftermarket mechanical. S-AWC is a factory stock part, and therefore safety is going to take precedent over all-out performance. I believe that's the same reason why there were companies in Japan reprogramming the AYC in the older Evos to be more aggressive. Putting a TRE diff (and maybe a 60/40 center) in an Evo IX would likely yield similar results to what BlackTrack found on the X...

From personal experience the 40/60 +TRE rear is awesome in the CT9A chassis. Most of the benefit is from the TRE diff though, which is much easier to install & 1/5 the price of the center diff.

I don't have any experience driving a IX WITH the Tre rear diff, but have been behind Nils and talked with him quite a bit about it.

That said, I think alot of it depends on power output of the car. My car below 350whp was a dream, not so much power oversteer, there just wasn't much, if any, understeer. Now that I have the Cusco LSD in the car, along with 450+whp, the understeer is cured and it feels alot like how Nils' car appears to drive. My car won't power oversteer as much as his does (he also has the 40/60 tho), but it does come around any time I need it to. Much nicer than the push of the AYC diff and over 350ish whp.

Maybe soon Nils and I will trade cars and we can give everyone some good feedback. As of now, I would say Stock IX w/TRE vs. Stock X would be very similar. Hope that helps a bit guys.

Blacktrack, is the cusco diff a rear diff then? Does it still let AYC operate?

Yes its the rear LSD. It replaces the AYC LSD. The car acts the same in every situation other than coming out of a corner hard. The new diff allows the car to rotate much more with all the power.

Thank you very much for your input man! I saw your vids too, you looked awesome out there! Congrats!

Sounds great though, what the tre rear diff can do for the 8/9.. I must admit I was pretty envious of the X's handling prowess
