Giro disc lightweight race rotors-group purchase

Quite some time ago I did some dyno testing on brake rotors. I had my RS on the dyno and wanted to see if I just swapped rotors in a back-to-back test if the car would gain power. The car was left on the dyno, rotors were swapped and the test was done.

I went from a nearly new set of stock EVO8 rotors to the standard Giro Disc front and rear rotors. The standard front Giro's are 17.4 pounds and the standard rears are 11.1 pounds. Stock rotors are 21.35 and 14.6 pounds.

So total weight saved was 14.9 pounds and the results were gains in power from about 4,000 to redline and at redline it was 7 whp.

As time went on I wanted to save more weight without ruining my RS. I contacted Giro Disc to make a more serious rotor for the car that was even lighter.

There were some other guys interested and talking to them too, like Jarrod Hoops, about the same thing and finally Giro Disc built us a kick *** race rotor.

The new full sized race rotor weigh in at 13 pounds for the front and 9 pounds for the rear. Total rotor weight, 44 pounds. This is 27.90 pounds LIGHTER than the stock EVO8-9 rotors!

To put this into further perspective, the Wilwood drag brake kits that are offered weigh in at: Front rotor 10 pounds and rear rotor 6.4 pounds.

I have been using the rotors on my RS for this entire past year. Braking is as good or better than with the stock rotor and we've done a LOT of braking from 150+ mph down to 0 with them, no problems, no warping.

The rotors are expensive to make and Giro Disc has not done another production run of these because of the cost. There is some interest now by a few people and Giro Disc has agreed to build a batch but we need atleast 5 guys to order a full set.

The price is $1600 for the set of 4 and we will cover the shipping in the lower 48 States for that price.

I have one order we took this morning to get things started. Please give us a call if you are interested in ordering a set and if you'd like post up here in the thread.

Thank you!!

David, with the race rotors...how much of an increase in whp? You mentioned peak hp with the street rotors, any dyno graphs with either version? I'd love to see it...loss in rotational mass>me. .

^^ EVOlutionary did a test on them and concluded that these are not the best option for RoadRacing, but are fine for Auto-X as well as Street driving styles.

HAHA lets do some math. you made 7hp gain from stock rotors to the girodisk standard 2 piece rotors. that was 14.9 lbs dropped. now you dropped another 13.0 lbs using the ultra light rotors. maybe you can gain another 6hp. for a total of 13hp over stock just on rotors. haha. either i have serious issues or i have a valid look on things....... maybe both.

^^^^ you seem to have a valid look on things. Depending on the dyno and other mods, based on your math that # looks about right. Not bad for a mod that will also help you stop and turn better too!

Buschur Racing is the only place to get these! Call David up and get on the list because once this batch is built, who knows if/when another run of them will be made! Don't miss out!

Will replacement parts be available for them or it's only a one time deal?

You would have to check with Martin at Girodisc to be 100% positive, but knowing the kind of customer service I have seen from Girodisc, I bet they would take care of you. Maybe Martin will pop in and let us know.

One thing I've wondered and never thought to ask him is whether these are a custom one-off disc casting, or if it is a stock rotor from some other car just machined down? Like maybe a Lambo or Ferrari disc machined down to fit the EVO? That could be a talking point for the carshow guys!! "yeah, I'm running custom Ferrari brake rotors on my EVO. . . "

evolutionary, thanks for posting information and links to the pictures, I appreciate it!!

I am also sure that replacement parts and such will be available.

These rotors are from a different casting that has been machined down, they have a very large air gap in the center.

We have used my car for street and drags, as I said, stopping numerous times from close to 160 mph. Not sure how many passes we made this year, I'd say 20+ at those speeds.
