Last week I bought and evo 4 with the intention of rebuilding it as a project car. My goals are to have 500ish hp and the best interior and exterior repair i can realisticly do.
I will forge the engine if it has not been done already (car was claimed to be forged by previous owner with "claimed" being the key word) I will do all suspension bushes and try to make the engine bay look good and clean everything up. This will be a very long term project (years not months) do to the funds mostly. I will try and get some picture up when i figure out how haha.

Here are a few pics of the car that i took just before taking the engine gearbox and transfer box out. Also a picture of the engine bay, nothing surprising to see there but hopefully will be a good before and after shot. Shot of car on trailer is when i picked it up the day that i bought it.

dont quote me but ive always been told that a major issue with the evo 4 is crankwalk which is why many owners swap them out for newer engines. any concerns about that?

Yeah, the evo4 engine shares the same thrust bearing setup as the evo1-3, but it's one of those things that its luck of the draw.

My evo4 never had it and that thing got a hiding.

Yea i was aware of this but for me the evo 4 is by far and away the cheapest model. I was always planing to rebuild the engine and this will get the end float with in specs and the fact of new aftermarket bearings and its only going to be a weekend car so will see very little kms/miles and also my personal opinion on the crank walk issue is that it is hyped up a lot. I do realize that is it real and does happen, im not denying that.

Have pulled the engine apart, just the crank and oil pump housing left and i have left that as i want to check the end float with a DTI just out of interest with the evo 4 crankwalk situation. Here are a few pics of the big end bearings, pistons, cylinders and big end journals. There are also a few pics of other things as i was taking the engine apart. The plan is to get the black to the engine shop and get the cylinders measure and get the next size up oversize pistons and then i get there specs to the engine shop to get the cylinders bored and honed. I will also get them to measure the journals on the crank so i know what size bearings to buy. They will surface the block also. I was planing on getting wiseco 1400 hd pistons, acl bearings (mains and big ends and eagle con rodes that should build my bottom end.[ATTACH]

So i got the crank out today and found that i have a evo 5 or newer block as i have the seperate thrusts. I also compared my engine number to a list on another fourm site and it said i have an evo 7 block. The main bearings are pritty hammered and i think the crank journals will need some attention. The question i have for anyone who knows is my block had a 7 bolt crank in it which i assume would be from the orignal evo 4 block. I was wondering if the cranks between the 6 and 7 bolts were different as if they are i would get a 6 bolt to suit my block but if they are the same i would keep my crank. I am aware that the crank and cradle should stay with the block and if its going to be changed the block and cradle should be line bored but i doubt this was done so will most likely get this done if i get feed back that the 7 and 6 bolt cranks are the same other than the obvious flywheel swap.

6 bolt and 7 bolt cranks are different you cannot use a 6 bolt crank in that block

Bought a clutch today. It is an exedy race series clutch. Now i need to spend a while saving up so i can get the engine to me machine shop and buy some pistions. The reason i bought the clutch this early on is because i want the engine shop to balance my entire bottom rotating assembly as a whole so crank pully, cambelt gear, crank, flywheel and clutch all bolted together

Cleaned engine bay today by using degreaser, scrubbing, water blasting and repeating for quite a few hours. Its not perfectly clean like a lot of cars you see on here but im happy as its going to be a road car so will get dirty again anyway.

OMG this is going to be amazing. I've always loved the Evo 3, 4, and especially the Evo 5.

Every time I see an Evo 4 it reminds me of that Jacky Chan movie "Who Am I" LOL.

If you haven't seen it, check it out. He drives around in a white Evo 4.
