Evo 6.5 Rear Diff Madness

Hello all,

Evo 6.5 Driving the car normally no problem. I take it for a good hack about 2-3kms up a mountain road with no problems. I turn around and start driving down the mountain slowly, every corner i turn a grinding, binding up noise from the rear (diff?). Buy the time im at the bottom the noise has pretty much gone..... AYC fluid is not low.......ideas thanks?!!!

Are you sure your rear diff is stock? Does it sound like https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...sfer-case.html

If so, its just the noise from the rear diff clutch packs. Just make sure you are changing your rear diff fluid every 10K miles.

I would go ahead and change the AYC and rear diff fluid (note: they are separate fluids). If you are not comfortable doing the work yourself, see if there is another evo owner nearby that could give you a hand, or just take it to a shop familiar with evos.

Here is the service manual http://www.evoscan.com/vehicle-manuals
Here is a nice writeup http://www.lancerregister.com/showth...+donkey+noises

P.S. Use OEM fluids if possible.

Be aware all rear differentials in USDM cars were disabled since they knew we'd run to the dealer when we heard a noise.
