2019 Mazda Miata... Brawny?!

I think this would make it actually a quick car that is also capable of 40 mpg.

this car is going to be an absolute beast. inching closer toward lotus elise numbers, and completely obliterates the nd1

you're getting a bit too dramatic there... I mean 26 more hp is great and all, but not a "beast" and not really gonna "obliterate" an ND1...

you don't think so? i do lol. remember when all the top spec miata drivers got booted for doing a tiny engine mod.. 26hp outright is significant on that car. over an extra 1% power to weight

well if you think about it from a spec racer point of view, then sure... but as a general street car track/lapping days its not gonna be a huge difference... autox will see an improvement just from the higher redline assuming the gear ratio's don't change..

That's really good power for a car that light and RWD. Sounds like a blast, to me. I bet it sounds decent at 8k RPM, too. I had a ton of fun in a FWD 2700lb car with 190whp @ 8200RPM. This could be even better.

It'll definitely be fun... the current cars can get up to about 170whp with bolt on, let's hope this can get up to 200, and have a transmission that doesn't chew up gears..

and I really hope they don't make it ugly like lots of mid cycle updates seam to do (frs comes to mind)

Hey you're right, they did make the rear ugly . Federal law mandates that all cars created after May of 2018 must have a backup camera if under 10,000lbs. Instead of placing the camera in a sensible location like they did in Japan (next to rear plate lights), they placed it smack dab in the middle of the rear bumper. It looks like a hole in the rear bumper and I'd imagine all it would take is one good bump to destroy it. People will probably get the older bumper skin and get the Japanese camera/mount.

People do turbo these cars to 300+ hp on the stock trans, but even with 155hp they are very fun to drive.

i was expecting the reviews to rave about the difference, but given that it's all up top through extra revs, seems like the impact isn't that crazy.. though it's goign to be a killer for autox now that it can hit higher speeds

Agreed. The dyno charts of an nd1 vs an nd2 are nearly identical below 6k. People won't feel it unless they drive the car hard.

Flyinmiata dyno results:

well if thats the only thing its not the end of the world... the FRS straight got smashed with the ugly hammer for its mid cycle refresh...

as far as the trans, if they're holding 300hp its cause the only time it put its 300hp to use was on the dyno. There's a local evo running around with 600hp on a stock block for years now, but he drives it like a granny all the time. there are plenty of ND's with just NA bolt-on's that are eating tranny's

I don't know the story behind the one(s) in the pics below, just showing an example of how they get chewed up... pretty sure these aren't the 300hp ones, there's only a handful of ND's making over 250whp. most boosted ones are in the low 200's and the NA cars are in the 170 range

friend of mine has one, so far he's less than 1 second faster than me on my NC at the local track (Ridge Motorsport Park) on tires that should prolly be 3-4 seconds faster... I'm on Hankook RS4's and he's on Toyo RR's. and he's been tracking a lot longer than me and also instructs... that being said, he's coming from a Camaro SS 1LE, so he's used to having that power crutch and not having to work nearly as hard for his laptimes

he's hinted at letting me do some laps in it, but idk if that'll actually happen.. we're not that close of friends... haha
