2019 Outlander Sport CarPlay radio in 2014, Factory Radio Upgrade Options

Would this work or what would it take to make it work?

What are the best factory radio upgrades if I have the most basic one. I saw a couple options online.

I got it done, was pretty easy and generally plug and play for the most part. Except for the little adapter I made to fast charge my phone while doing apple carplay. Very happy with it.

For my 2014 this was the harness you need:

Radio 8741A005 (Outlander sport) or 8741A006 (Outlander) either will work for our purposes as the firmware is more so for the can bus and you can also change which car the radio is on in the hidden menu. Whatever you can find cheaper is best.

8755A129 this will replace a terminating plug in the car and instead route to the radio. Default it sends your mic and speakers to the bluetooth module, afterwards this harness sends it to the radio as this will handle calls and your bluetooth module will be not be used.

GPS Antenna You will need an antenna for the radio otherwise you get an alert. You can use this one, I believe mine failed but you can always cannibalize the connector to adapt the old style of GPS antenna which is plentiful.

USB cable You will need this USB Adapter as the radio will have 2 proprietary usb ports on the back. I used this one to make a fast charge car play connection.

USB Adapter This adapter from Aliexpress will allow you to plug your existing USB harness in the center console into the new radio. Keep in mind you will need to repin the bottom or top wires in the connector as its made wrong.

Splitter I used this USB C splitter to basically draw power from USB to charge phone separate from Data connection. This is because the Carplay charges at 1A and with this adapter you can fast charge while Carplay is connected. Keep in mind you will need to flip the usb C cables around when you plug them into this device because we are only using half of each cable. So have your Radio and Charger installed before messing with this so you phone can get a charge and connect to the radio when you flip the USB C orientations into this device.
There's also this adapter which seems more convenient than the one I used: Adapter

Charger Charger
This was the charger I used. It was nice because I just made a Y cable to the cigarette port wiring in the back since it uses spade connectors to this device.

If you get lost there's some good info here. Keep in mind they use a connector to add in the microphone instead of the OEM part which I found that does the job without hacking up the harness. Also the Y cable for fast charge is all me.

Our 2015 has the Rockford Fosgate system, but no nav.or Android Auto.

i added a stand-alone Android device to get wireless AA (also has Carplay). powered by 12V cig jack. our car has no aux inputs, so the unit i have connects to phone with Bluetooth AND then connects to the car's Bluetooth for audio *** this is important if your car has no aux input - RCA or miniplug.

some have built-in front and rear dashcams, too.

Pros: cheap, relatively easy to install (hiding wires a little more difficult), wireless connection, nice EQ for tweaking audio, nice eye-level position in OS to view navigation

Cons: phone calls have an echo on the other end (my unit is a couple years old now - newer ones or a different brand may be better?)

generic photo, mine is placed above radio in a similar spot

i might be interested in doing this setup.

Below is the comparison of 2016 outlander GT vs 2018 Outlander.

i see harness you mentioned (point 2) is already there. So i need Hyundai cable for USB. what else ?

By the looks of it, you may need the gps antenna as well. The radio throws a warning without one plugged in, but it doesn't really use it from what I can tell.

I just want to correct the given SDA (aka Mitsubishi Connect) head unit part numbers and note some of their differences:
8741a001 = Outlander
8741a005 = Outlander Sport/RVR
8741a006 = Outlander and supersedes/replaces 8741a001

Also as a FYI it is also my understanding models from other regions that do not have a volume knob will also work, but do not have SiriusXM, so if you don't care about that and want an even cleaner look there are more part numbers and countries to choose from.

Later 8741a006 units lack HDMI port on rear, it can be added back in but if you want an HDMI port be aware of this when buying.
8741a001 and 8741a006 use the CANBUS to determine if the vehicle is in R gear for backup camera where as 8741a005 uses input on it's 8 PIN connector.

Can anyone confirm their factory backup camera has worked with a 001 or 006 after just dropping it in and changing SDA vehicle type to 3X45 (Outlander Sport/RVR) because I was under the understanding it will still not work without adding a CANBUS adapter and changing ETACS settings?

UPDATE: my rear camera quit working, and i got tired of the echo on BT calls. got a new AA/Carplay unit ... this one allows the audio to connect directly to the OS bluetooth, so audio is the same as factory. also, it acts as a dashcam with front and rear cameras, and the rear cam attaches to the backup lights, so in reverse you get a second HD backup cam. currently $89 on Amazon ...

I just put a Boss 7" in my Volvo V70 and debating getting one for the Mitsu...

But, is there a list of all the Mitsu headunits that may fit? I have the RF setup without nav in my 15. The HU in my 17 is definitely nicer with CarPlay. What about factory ones from like a 20?

If Evo is USDM and if you have a backup camera 8741a005 RVR/Outlander Sport is the OEM head unit I'd recommend. 8741a005 was used 2018-2020 and has built in wired Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto as well as SiriusXM built in. Physically fits perfectly in 2014-2015 North American Lancers and functions with the OEM Rockford AMP and doesn't require cutting or splicing any wires with the OEM install kit.

Additionally you'll either need an OEM navigation install kit MZ360438EX (or similar) and Outlander Sport/RVR USB cable for the easiest install. Alternatively you can bypass the handsfree module and re-wire the mic and USB port and add a GPS antenna not from the install kit.

8741a001 or 8741a006 from an Outlander will also work if you don't have a backup camera (and might if you do).

Finally circling back around to this. Ordered a A005 HU for my 15 OSX (RF Sub, no nav), and ordering 8755A129 tomorrow from my local dealer (I'm close with them, get a good price). Don't care much about the no antenna warning for no GPS antenna at the moment, assuming it's on for a few seconds and disappears. Now reading more into this, Carplay won't work without a USB adapter? Link above is dead, what exactly am I looking for?

Mainly replacing my original HU because the Bluetooth keeps cutting in and out... bottom inch of the screen is unresponsive too but, BT is what matters.

HU installed and.... yea, awesome!

So, confirmed again in case anyone else ever searches.... 15 Outlander Sport, RF without Nav, A005 HU seriously was installed in under 10 minutes. A129 Cable fixed the mic issue. Still going to search for an alternative to the $200 Mitsu cable to get Carplay to work. Going to try to get the cable down to the center console factory location in my 15, then use a wireless dongle there. I just really like the wireless fast charger I've been using for 2 years now.

Now, I do have the same issue the wife's stock A001 / A006 has in her 17 Outlander SEL, where I sound distant in the microphone. So going from the other thread in the Evo section, going to do a factory update on her factory '17, and the '20 HU in my '15 tomorrow.

Audio wise... sounds better than the original HU (8701A587), however, and still playing with it, but the factory sub doesn't have the same "kick" with the A005 without the volume near max.
