Old thread bump warning?

Hey guys, it seems that we still see old threads getting bumped needlessly by post whoring (or clueless) newbs. For example, post #40 here:

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...oof-scoop.html

I've seen a warning feature on other vBulletin boards, that may help to prevent this. It still allows bumping a thread, but it makes the poster think twice before doing it, like this:

Can we get that feature turned on here please?

Thanks.

And now that you've passed it on to me, I'll pass it up the line. I like it.

Great idea. How about also displaying a warning if someone has less than 50 posts whenever they reply to a thread to the effect that they should not post meaningless stuff like "nice numbers". This is really annoying in the dyno numbers section when you want to follow an interesting thread, just to be drawn in when a newbie makes a reply that's just completely meaningless. I think this is the forum rule:

When replying to a thread in ANY of our tech forums, the poster should have at least one of the following: additional content pertaining to the subject, a related technical question. Replies with useless, unrelated comments or questions will be deleted.

No, you do not have it right as there currently is no warning. We are having a discussion about the merits of such a warning.

Now as in there will be. Sorry I was not clear enough. Also as in you got to be kidding me. Is it really that big of a deal that an old thread got bumped up? Maybe you should fix the search functions that bring up random threads that sometimes don't even match with what people search for. That would help as if it worked right more up to date stuff would appear and have a few things to read and decide to reply to. They reply to an old thread because that's the crap that comes up.

Yup, we'll get to work on that also. Thanks for the suggestion,

I think it depends who/how/why it was bumped.

If someone search, found said thread matched their needs, and they posted in it - great. A system warning to make sure they are aware of an old thread. Cool. They can be double sure its correct.

If someone does the above then just posts "nice, bump, etc" and they ignored the warning on the old thread. Well, enough said.

I agree with everything said. I dont know if had just been some recent influx of new members or what, but it seems like everyday I see a thread from 08, 09 etc that is being bumped. Most of the time it is not an insightful thought or question directly relating to the topic, it is just a simple answer like "i have those springs too, they rock" or "Nice car!". seemingly just random and useless.

i am by no means an expert, but it just gets annoying. Seems to me that if you find a thread that pertains directly to your question, but is years old, it would be better advised just to PM the original thread starter, or any member that correctly answered the question. Direct source = direct answer and less of everybody's time being wasted.

I think assigning points to members that bump old threads really cannot become standard because it depends on the post, the thread, response etc. Case by case. But a advisory notice, suggestion to other means, and a better search function all used in conjunction with each other could potentially make the site more user friendly for everyone.

but hey, just probably me ranting because im at the office on Football sunday. what do I know haha

Wow, so we chastise noobs for posting without searching. Now they do the search, find the relevant info, make a post and now we jump on them for doing THAT because the thread is old but they still have questions.

Why not just ban all noobs, close/lock all threads after 90 days and have a stale forum. After all, all subjects have been covered in full detail for years and years. Nothing new except....awesome numbers, nice wheels, cool mod or nice choice.... for pages and pages.

I just found a post from 06 on another forum that got bumped with plenty of new input on the subject of rubber vs. poly bushings. It was interesting to see after 5 years the developments that occurred.

Just saying, if you don't like thread bumps, don't read on, but why punish those that take the noble advice from all the experts on here and use the search function, which has become famous on this site.

Instead of just helping people, it's a who can jump on them hard the fastest. It really is just arrogance IMO. Many don't know simple stuff. Me included. I try to search when I can, but how relevant is an exhaust review from 1.5 years ago? Maybe the thing rusted out, maybe the muffler got loud over time....etc.

So to give it a bump, is really hurting anyone to have to read the post? Isn't that what a forum is for? Interaction on the topic? If those in the know have it all down pat, maybe the vets should be banned so the noobs can live in peace without persecution.

I don't see how dates effect the information provided. If it gets bumped with a member asking an additional question then whats the big deal? Removing old thread bumping just sounds more of an annoyance then convenience.
