^^^^^^^^^ I have been getting this ALL day, what's wrong?

LancerEvoMR Jan 14, 2004 07:03 PM

It's not an error. It's just the server being "overworked" per se. Pretty soon we'll have to upgrade.

Mark is already looking into it, in terms of the currents servers status:

Yeah, this server's lasted about a year now. I think this may be in the running for the longest lasting one yet.

What all is involved hardware wise in running this site as far as computers, phone line(s), etc.?

HobieKopek Jan 16, 2004 11:01 AM

Mark (KK) is the only one I'm aware of who has all that info.

nastea Jan 16, 2004 11:10 AM

i can assure you that there are no phone lines ;)

LDB Jan 16, 2004 11:44 AM

Well, I have no idea what is involved hardware wise and asked out of genuine curiosity hoping for an answer.

nastea Jan 16, 2004 11:46 AM

i'm sure it has to do with cpu utilization

You're prolly looking at definitely a dual if not quad processor. Best bet would be to go with a Dual Xeon..even though I am a HUGE AMD fan. At least 2-3 Gigs DDR RAM. Tons of drive space...hopefully in RAID5. As for the circuit, it more than likely has to be a T1 or greater. Don't know if Mark has a dedicated T1 to his server or where the site is being hosted.

HobieKopek Jan 16, 2004 11:51 AM

Maybe Mark mentioned it at the last upgrade. Gonna check old announcements.

EDIT: No dice. :(

its running linux 7.3 so it should be pretty well off. i don't know about specs but.

I had a conversation with MArk about this a little while ago. I think I remember him saying that the servers (plural) that run this site are rented. They are down in the south somewhere churning away remotely. But he said if he was to run the site from his home (which he is/was considering), he would need 3-4 T1 lines to support the current load. That gives you an idea regarding how data intensive this site really is.

If you are a dork about this kind of stuff, here is the link to the web statistics for this site. http://webstats.evolutionm.net/usage.png

One year ago, this site was averaging 190,000 page views per day. So far this month, the site has averaged 790,000 page views per day. That is a HUGE jump in one year!

I was surprised that there are nearly 16,000 members, that can account for much of the high traffic the server is seeing. also alot of people view the site and aren't members.

HobieKopek Jan 17, 2004 12:44 AM

The high traffic is prolly cuz we're on every major search engine and metacrawler and do not require a login to view anything. Note the number of guests online at any given time.

Secret Chimp Jan 18, 2004 11:10 PM

Also....lots of other sites post links to our threads in their forums.

When I check to see who is logged in at any given time, the bulk of the 'guests' are usually looking at one or two specific threads.
