E85'ed up by KevinD

New mods in the sig. Incredibly satisfied with the results. The car has more speed than I can use now. I highly recommend E85 to anyone willing to put up with the minor headaches. The mod was cheap and the results are pretty unreal. It was between this and meth injection, but I like the extra convenience of having to deal with only one tank, being able to get the fuel at a real live gas station, and not having to mess with a separate (and complicated) new system in the car.

The one recommendation I would make though is to consider 1000cc injectors. I am at 84% duty cycle now, and if I wanted to...oh I dunno...slap on an EvoGreen turbo or something, the 850's would likely not cut it. Not that I will ever do that...like I said the car's got more speed than I can use as it is.:mitsu: :) :mitsu:

Next on the list is to get the alt map ECU mod working so I can switch between E85 and pump without reflashing.

+ 1

I converted about 2 or 3 weeks ago, its amazing stuff!!! I think you wont have any blend issues in austin, I think you guys are on e85 year round, but according to all the blend schedules I have seen, we are in the time of year when a change could happen, so watch your A/F....

I also recommend 1000cc for sure, I got 660 and I'm about 98% duty cycle on the stock turbo at 25.5psi boost......

Congrats on the change, and glad you are happy with the results!

It is just a different type of "gas" fuel. You will need bigger injectors and fuel pump to accomodate the need of running E85. I think it uses about 1/3 more volume to reach the same AFR's. Let an expert give you the info for sure though.

And yes just e85 fuel marked as such from a station that carries it.

denver Sep 23, 2008 08:45 PM

^^ what he said, you need bigger injectors, I would defiantly suggest a min of 1000cc injectors even with the stock turbo, you also need a walbro fuel pump for sure (you should get that as one of your first mods) that is pretty much it.... you are going to want to have a boost controller for sure too...... And of course a kevinD, (maybe even a Denver tune :-)

You can not get e85 at all gas stations, but in the DFW area there are bout 15 or 20 stations, mostly krogers. The benefits, you get to advance timing a lot, and turn the boost up to about 27-30psi depending on your turbo, and it cheap, around the $3.00/gal range....

The disadvantage is you will use more fuel, about 30% to be exact, however under cruising and daily driving the effect aren't as bad as you would expect b/c you can run fairly lean during cruising, some are claiming 20 to 23 mpg during normal driving (I personally have not done any normal driving and have gotten about 15 mpg on average) Also, it is NOT available everywhere so if you travel a lot, probably not a good choice in fuel. You are going to have to pay attention to your A/F meter and do logs, because the % ethanol could switch to a winter blend, (e70). And it starts hard in the cold, but not a big issue....

The fuel has a different burn rate than regular gas, and has a octane rating of about 105, which = Good stuff! Like running race-gas all the time... since it is an alcohal, it has cooling property as well, which is where a most of the benefits are coming from, it is much more resistant to knock than gas.....

I think that about covers it........spend some time in the alternatives fuel thread, you'll find more than you ever wanted to know about fuel....

nice, i wish we had one of the those e85 gas stations down here.

Are these the minor headaches the orginal poster sort of hit on in his first post? What does meth raise your octane rating to? It does raise it a bit doesn't it? My girlfriend just bought a car that can run e85 but so far we haven't been able to spot any stations in our area that carries it
