Comp Cam 280's vs HKS 272's

These cams have been on back order for awhile now, it took Smokie almost 3 months to get these to me

I was originally running HKS 272's with a Utec and the Turbotrix bb50trim kit. With the 272's Mark tuned it and my car idled like stock and pulled HARD. Luckily I got these comp 280s in time for our next Pcola tt tune. With my exsisting tune the 280s have a slight lope. I noticed that the car leaned out a little in the mid-range, but it pulls a lot harder up top from 5k-7.5k.

Some observations I've made on these cams:
They are hollow, the lobes are HUGE, I've raised my idle to 1k to help with the lope and possible stalling issues, and they are very nice quality

Pics speak louder than words, so here they are:

I have these in mind also, how do you like these cams? Did u feel a loss of power from low-midrange?

I am still untuned so it would not be an accurate assessment. I will let you know this weekend though ;-)

I have 280 comp cams in my car, the top end and even the mid range is unbelievable. for daily drive, highway pulls and drag racing, these cams feels way faster than my HKS 264. I autox a lot and notice the transaction of the power delivery is a little too violent for me. Mark then smooth out the powerband a little with his new tune and I will try them out at another autox this weekend or else I will have to go with a set of 272. I really don't want to give up on the 280 because the power is just INSANE! I'll see how it goes this weekend.

Can you elaborate a little?

evo0486t Mar 30, 2006 09:21 AM

I have the comps 280s too.. and all I can say is that I felt the car loose a little bit of low end " but not a big deal to me " and mid range all the way to 7800 this things pulls so hard and the power comes in really fast and violent just as KEVO said.. Im ruunin 24lbs and its not till at least 6800 that the boost start to drop slightly.. really nice power gain for the $$ ...

I wonder if the comp cams are re-grinds, I heard they used to re-grind domestic cam's

Lets say you are in a tight corner, and it requires your to slow down to under 3000rpm when you gas out of the corner, you will feel some delay in boost in the beginning but all of a sudden, BOOM the power hit so violently it will kick the rear end out in a not so progressive way. I've been autoxing the evo since it first came out in 03 and this is the first time ever I experience power oversteer from it. Last week it was very cold in NY and I was running street tires. Mark smooth out the power band a little yesterday and I will try it out with 285 kumho 710 this week. Should be interesting.

sleet Mar 30, 2006 06:51 PM

And how do they compare to the HKS 280s? I can't wait to get my 280s in.

Considering the fact that they are hollow - I'd be inclined to think they are regrinds.

midwestmonster Mar 30, 2006 09:16 PM

Let us know the numbers before and after being tuned. You have numbers with the HKS cams? Are you going to get tuned with same mods and boost for accurate test?

Just because the cams are hollow don't mean they are automatically regrinds. Before I got into imports I built small block chevy's for 13 years and used Comp exclusively. I have ran everything from 280 Magnums in 327's to custom ground solid rollers in 427ci stroker mouse motors, trust me Comp Cams is a bad a#$ cam company. In order to satisfy my curiousity, I went to Comps web site and found this:

http://www.compcams.com/information/...iCamshafts.pdf

....sorry man, but your inclination is wrong - the Comps are indeed new cores and not regrinds.
