Swapping ECU's

Is it possible to use an ECU from someone else's car? I have an '03 and someone on this forum is selling an ECU from an '03. I am seriously considering it so I don't have to have downtime when I send my ECU in to for the XEDEFlash on my Stage 1+. Anyone have experience with this? I did a quick search and didn't come up with anything real concrete.

Thanks

when my ecu on my galant vr4 went bad we bought a used one and it was bad. then got one from a reliable source used and it worked perfect. my guess is that it would work fine

My understanding is that you will have to take it to a dealership to get the security code flashed to work with your car.

What he said^^^^^^^^^^^^,and when you get your ecu back from being flashed you will have to back to dealer to have your ecu programmed back to your imobilizer,it can only work with 1 ecu.If you got the imobilizer box with ecu then you would be all set.I tried the ecu swap and I had my spare ecu programmed at dealer to my imobilizer and when I attempted to hook original ecu up it would not work, had to have it programmed back.I ended up getting a 2nd imobilizer for 2nd ecu.Hope this helps

Cool

I have asked the same question, i was told that each ecu has the vin# or identifier in the ecu, so it can only be used for YOUR car. they are not interchangeable. Maybe you have to re enter or change the security codes. but you cant just swap ecus without doing something electronically to them.

well this is from personal experience. i had the factory reflash from mitsubishi, not knowing it would no longer allow me to boost as high or rev as high thanks to the xede flash i had burned onto the ecu. anyways they told me i needed a new ecu in order to put the xede flash back onto it. i also have an 03 evolution. when i ordered my ecu from the dealer they said they needed my vin# because for that year alone there are 8 different ecus. so there is a chance it might not work.

That sounds very suspect....Mitsu have tried to fix the P0300 code a few times now....maybe the "8" figure corresponds to the amount of flashes they have tried to fix the problem, I suspect the real reason they wanted your vin# is so there will be a record of the ECU being replaced...this will then be used if a bogus warranty claim was filed....Just a thought

who knows maybe. what sucks though is i couldnt find any ecus in the forums so i had to buy onebrand new. it cost 900! anyways i got it and didnt even think about installing it at first to see if it worked. anyways i sent it to calvin at vishnu and he put the xedeflash back on it for me since my last one had it done. got it back, installed it and my car wouldnt start. i double checked the connections and it still didnt start. i installed my old one and it did start. tried to install new one again and it still didnt start. now mitsubishi is doing and exchange with me for another one.

That Delaership is full of ****.... There is only 1 ECU for the EVO8 That p/n is MN132874. Andrew is correct about needing the ECU# for warranty, but if you're paying for it, then they are lying.

You can swap ECUs, BUT you have to get the keys (immobilizer) reprogrammed to your car, just like TurboDan said earlier. Unless you buy another Immobilizer ECU. The immobilizer p/n is MR587939.

They sell you one and they put in a warranty claim with and get reimbursed for their cost plus labor. Makes for good profit. Anyway, that's what I would figure.
