Thinking about getting SMART

hi all,

i have an xede with a dyno tuned v390 and am thinking about the SMART. i'm looking for the added response(drivability) that others have mentoned. i've found some negatives to SMART such as:

installation(xede) problems
smoothness(map switching)
tuning issues

i'm looking for smooth, responsive power under light, medium, and heavy loads. i like the non-smart smoothness but i would hate to get SMART and sacrifice the smoothness. can the smoothness be tuned in...? how easy is this to achieve...?

I felt that when I changed it smoothed out my drivability. I highly suggest SMART unless you are good at adjusting your tune. In which case you need a wideband anyway and should just go ahead and get the SMART.

See where I'm going with this. It is a great upgrade in my opinion. It looks like lots of future mods will build off of SMART too.

thanks cajun,

i appreciate the feedback. i'm seeing peoples' early experiences that seem to make SMART more problematic.

any more comments from SMART users...? i would think that there are quite a few of these out there.

thanks,

My experience with SMART has been great. My car drives better, accelerates smoother and part throttle transitions are transparent. The problems you mention may stem off by someone not using/activating any one of the 3 components of the system, ie. LC-1, knock buffer or C-reader. Like Cajun Power said; "lots of future mods will build off of SMART too".

I just finished my SMART install and didn't feel like using the C-Reader. I never seems to turn off when it's plugged in even if the car is off. I thought all it does is read and clear SES codes when they appear. I've be running without it for a few days now and haven't seen a SES light pop up yet on my dash. Do some performance hampering codes come up that do not trigger a SES light?

If you want to run any maps in the Xede that advance timing (smart or not) then you need to leave the C-Reader plugged in. That or prepare for P0300 HELL!

In the spirit of full disclosure I get the P0300 code and associated misfiring A LOT more after I added the smart system.

Are you running a cReader? If not plug it in! See my post right above this one.

Yep.. you gotta run a CReader if you are running the SMART system. Without it, the timing gymnastics will send misfire diagnostics loopy.

Are you sure the C-reader is working? What does it say on it when it is powered up with the car running? There was a batch of C-Readers out there that didn't communicate the EVO. We thought we swapped all of them out but you could still have one. You'll know it because it will say "E" on it.

No the cReader appears to work fine. It will turn of the CEL within a few minutes and reports the code if I bother to look.
