I'm back on the Road!

Just wanted to let everyone to know that my car has been running for about a week now and seems, well, almost perfect. For those of you that don't know, I have just finished a ground up install. I have a AMS 2.3 liter stroker with an AMS 35R turbo kit. My goals remain to be accomplished, but I want to have the most powerful Xede controlled evo in states. I also want it to be fully daily driveable. I only have 210 miles on it as of now but I plan to use this thread to keep everyone updated. I have a couple of things to say about the experience:
1. Everyone should have a beater car. During the rebuild, I bought a 1991 Chevy Lumina. It keep me on the road and only cost me $519. Now I will use it to keep the miles down on my Evo. Your stress level is SOOO much lower when you have a back up car.

2. Tuning Technologies and their machinist Dan Benson are a force to be reckoned with. Their attention to detail is unsurpassed. The motor shows every sign that it was built to perfection. If you are from SoCal, call them at 909 783 1200. They are in regular communication with Shiv.

3. Shiv rocks: I sent him my ECU and asked him to scale it for 880cc injectors. He said that it might idle like crap due to limitations of the stock ecu but he'd do his best. Results?: Idles perfectly at 840 to 900 rpms with 272s and K&N cone intake. Not bad for long distance tuning. Thanks Shiv. Also, thanks to Vishnu who sold my downpipe for me during the rebuild for a great price. ( to Dustin). I am getting p172 system too rich codes, but those will be addressed when the car is tuned.

4. AMS will get props on their own forum, but their product is top notch. Keeping their beast caged during the break in is like sticking your finger in the crack of a breaking dam. Lots of restraint and concentration is needed to keep the potential energy from becoming kenetic. One more thing: It is LOUD. Definitely need to get some more exhaust work done.

5. Using my SMART Innovative Wideband, I was able to datalog using my neighbor's Innovative logger. I'm at 10.5:1 at the start of little mini-full throttle pulls from 2500rpms, and am at 9.5:1 at the end at around 4500. I'm keeping the max rpms at 5000 for now and it is hard as hell to keep the boost down since I have a 1.4 bar wastegate spring. I'm always having to transition to partial throttle at the end of my logging of AFRs.

Congrats Smog - however hard it may be - take it easy until you get sorted out.

When do I get my ride?

How long until you tune it and can get some numbers up?

Hows the spoolup smog,is it responsive.

Smogrunner Aug 21, 2005 02:25 PM

The spool is in the 3000s, not the 4000s. What is great is that the 2.35 liters of displacement give more power when off boost, so I can zip around from light to light at 5psi without feeling like a snail.

Congrats bro. I am extremely jealous.

You still on the stock tranny and transfercase? What clutch you running?

I wish i was closer, to get to feel the madness. Oh yah, are you runnin alky?

wikdwhiterabbit Aug 21, 2005 02:35 PM

Congrats to Smoggy! I'm gonna get an AMS 2.3 w/ a WR ... if you can spool the 35r in the 3000's...I should be able to spool at around um 2,000 :D

nuff said.

Tranny is stock, but the transfer case has the Quaiffe LSD. I'm running the Exedy triple carbon clutch. Stiff pedal but VERY easy to modulate. No stalling...

wikdwhiterabbit Aug 21, 2005 02:54 PM

Sorry for being off topic Smoggy, but how does the Nisei intercooler compare to the AMS?

Smogrunner Aug 21, 2005 03:01 PM

The AMS is a extremely nice unit. You can't go wrong with it. The Nisei is a big intercooler that should be perfect for my application. I think the Nisei company has my old AMS intercooler and they are running a comparison test with it.

Ron said your motor failed again during it break-in period or some such thing. Are you running now?

EvoTio Aug 22, 2005 10:23 AM

Congrats and I hope you can enjoy it for many years. It sounded very healthy when you fired it up at TT last Saturday.
