xede won't work...help

in the process of hooking up this xede. finished putting the car together last night and it runs. then started to hook up the xede. got it all hooked up and the light came on fine, computer saw the xede. went in today to try and update the firmware. MISTAKE...
first I had to install the printer driver. now I am trying to update it. follow the directions to the purple wire into the black connector and strip the red one. cycle the car on/off, then try to start. won't start. hour later pull the ecu out, reconnect everything and it now starts. hook the xede back up and there are now no lights on it.
wtf.....

anybody have any suggestions?

tried unhooking the xede a few times and I cannot get any light, orange or otherwise to come on, computer cannot find the xede....

why did you want to update the firmware?

jrsimon27 Feb 11, 2006 10:29 AM

did you instal the negative wire?

sandm Feb 11, 2006 10:34 AM

yes. it is around 6 months old and is running the old ver2, not ver3 for smart enabled. I bought it brand new from a guy that had not ever used it, but it has been sitting in the garage since august last year.

ground/boost wire are the only connections to make when installing it originally. it did work when I first plugged it in, had the flashing yellow light, now after trying the black pin9 mod to send it into boot mode, I get nothing.

You need to update the firmware to run SMART.

I am a little puzzled by the need to install a printer driver? The only drivers I have had to install were the ones to get my USB serial adapter to work. Once in place the XMAP software is all you need.

As far as the purple wire – you used pin 9 on the black connector? This just needs to be connected to a power source. I actually used the power from the cigarette lighter instead of splicing the harness.

How far did you get through the firmware update?

sandm Feb 11, 2006 10:57 AM

got to the point where you start the car, and it wouldnt start, so i unhooked everything, got the car to finally start, and now no light. thought maybe it was stuck in the boot mode, but not sure how to get it out of that mode. have unhooked the power to the xede/ecu several times and nothing...

you may have it in boot mode. did you reconnect all the wires to original positions? As you are touching the red wire (power) the car xede will automatically go to boot mode and no light will show.

yea, was in boot mode. think I got the right firmware in the machine, but i have a few questions. cannot upload a map. keeps giving me an error in xmap that says the file on the xede doesn't match the file currently being viewed. trying to start with a basic v390 non-smart map. downloaded it but cannot see it with xupdate to install. they seem to be a diff. format.

when I open xupdate and click on the link to view the xede information, the screen just keeps flashing a get information bar and there is garbage in several of the places, such as timing signal, vehicle id, pld version and a few others. should this be happening or is it because there is no map loaded..

Open your Xmap software, not the Xupdate software to upload new maps. Once Xmap is open, open your new map and then you can hit the control button + U to upload the map to the Xede, followed by control + B in order to burn the image to the eeprom. Theoretically you should just be able to burn, but about half the time if I dont' upload AND burn, it'll give me a mismatch error. I have no clue why.

sandm Feb 11, 2006 01:27 PM

I have gotten the mismatch error every time I try to upload and burn. so you are saying not to burn?

sandm Feb 11, 2006 01:29 PM

keeping in mind that I have not had an old map. this xede is new with no map loaded??

A418t81 Feb 11, 2006 01:32 PM

I"m not sure I understand what is going on. If you open XMap and then use the "open" command in Xmap to open a map stored to your computer, it will give you a "mismatch" error as there should be NOTHING on your Xede after a firmware update. The error isn't significant, it should let you upload and burn the image and then the map should be stored.

Once you complete the upload and burn, you can test to see what the Xede actually has stored by pressing F8...it'll ask if you want to download and show all maps, hit yes. Compare the maps actually downloaded to those you uploaded, they should be the same. If they aren't, I'm not sure whats going on. I would recommend a fresh firmware burn and begin with a fresh slate.

Not sure if this will help you any:

I open xupdate and then open the 93oct v390 non-smart map off vishnu's website. I then upload this and burn it to the xede. that goes fine, but then when i look at the map in the xede, it gives me the error that the map on teh xede and the map in xmap dont match. it asks to do something, something and then there's an ignore button.

A418t81 Feb 11, 2006 01:37 PM

So have you pressed F8 to actually see what the Xede has stored?

sandm Feb 11, 2006 01:41 PM

going to do that now. in the car.. :)
