I voted custome. WHY becuase its insane to pay 700 or more on a dam exhaust that I can have made for halh that. I know of a good muffler shop that does mandrel bending in either SS or mild steel and they dont charge much. Hell a EVO exhuast cant be that hard its one long pipe and two bends **** thats easy. I could get a Vishnu or a Ultimate racing cat back made for about $350 installed its just piping and a magnaflow muffler. IM putting a full 3' on my EVO with Apexi N1 turbo universal and custome SS piping i bet it wont cost me more than $320 out the door ready for some fun. I get great deals on APEXI parts so if some body wants a muffler im me

just my .02

EDIT here are some pics of my 3 inch SS mandrel bent apexi N1 set up https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...threadid=38457

Having read all of these posts with DPs breaking off at the flange, carbon mufflers peeling, exhausts rusting through, mufflers dangling from broken hangers... I am sticking with the tried and true RMR turbo-back. If it's good enough for Al's 600hp car, it's good enough for my car.

RMR all the way---clean welds, Stainless Steel, everything fits perfectly tucked away. A little noisy--but that's what I wanted.

For the people who have aftermarket exhausts, how are you going to deal with emissions/smog tests later down the road?

RMR is 50-state legal. Nice. Besides, it's kinda hard to do the dyno smog test on an AWD car. Not many gas stations have AWD dynos...

I'm assuming that in order for the RMR exhaust to be street legal, one would have to use the stock catalytic converter? Or would it be possible to use a high-flow cat?

I am using the stock cat (so technically there is a 2.5" section in there), but RMR now has a high-flow 3" cat - I don't know if it's street-legal or not... Call them.

Once you free up that cat, you're definately going to notice the difference, at least 15 whp. My friend Jeff (evo1) compared stock cat vs high flow on the dyno.

To answer the thread question, I have the HKS Carbon Ti custom system built by RMR. Basically the RMR cat-back with a carbon-ti muffler. I'm not worried about it peeling since I'm an HKS retailer, I'll just send i back or get another one at wholesale price.

Chris, did you notice a loss in low-end torque with your RMR downpipe at all? I'm trying to decide between the HKS 2.65" downpipe and the RMR 3" one. I've has some people tell me the car needs a bit more throttle to get it moving on the low end but at the top end it screams with a 3". With the HKS 2.65 the low end isn't affected, you just dont get as much top end.

Rob,

I really couldn't tell you the answer. The day I got my Evo back from putting the downpipe on, RMR borrowed the car for their ECU work. I'll tell you, not one mod so far has made my car feel weaker or missing either HP or TQ. Keep in mind that with your 3" exhaust, the DP will help - esp if swap for the high-flow cat later. That's what I kept in mind when I did all my stuff.

thanks for everyone's input,i decided to go with the rmr cat-back with downpipe but anybody has an idea if the freeflow cat for the evo universal or specified for it .i want to get a 3" high flow cat before i install the rmr exhaust/dp to have a turbo-back exhaust.

Per RMR (i.e. caveat emptor), their high-flow cat is smog legal. Unfortunately, (again, according to RMR) there is apparently a law on the books indicating that a cat cannot be replaced for the first 5 years unless it is irreparably damaged. So, if you're planning a fender bender, target the rear passenger side . Alternatively, I suppose one could simply swap the stocker for high-flow, smash the stock one with a hammer, and then claim it was 'vandalized by eco-terrorists' if you're ever pulled over or smogged. YMMV.

I got the new OPTIONS magazine. Dude, we ain't got **** in the US.

There have got to be 30 or 40 different styles of muffler and cat for the Evo VIII, maybe more.

I can led u the mag if you'd like to order something directly from Japan.

I'll even translate, just to check out your ryde when it's JDM exhaustified!
