Question Bigger turbos and gas mileage...

I'm really not too happy with the crappy gas mileage that we get from our little 2 liter 4 banger. I'm currently getting ~24 to 25 mpg on the highway, sometimes much less than that Since highway cruising speed = ~3500rpm, which also equals full spool on the stock turbo, I'm thinking that if I were to get a slightly larger turbo (say something like a 3037 or 3071) that spools up maybe 500rpm later than the stocker, then my gas mileage should improve.

Any thoughts on this? Anyone with a larger turbo, please chime in.

That makes no sense. Even at cruise speeds your are not in boost which = less gas usage.
Boost= sucks gas. Do not boost= sucks less gas LOL =)

I think he means that if you do any acceleration at all while cruising (to get past a truck, or something) you are instantly into boost.... but with a bigger turbo you could do a "moderate" acceleration without going into boost.

Technically this is correct, but unless you are constantly accelerating and decelerating when cruising (oxymoron there) you would see little or no improvement. Find some other reason to give the wife for why you want the upgrade

yeah, but at cruising speed, even the slightest touch on the gas = instant boost ... hence the theory.

I dont know what you guys are talking about. If I put my foot to the floor ~3500rpms then yes I am in boost. But if I give a little gas, boost pressure comes up but not crazy. He didnt mention anything about passing cars, but even on a turbo upgrade with full throttle ~3500 going to be just about the same and now you have more air which is going to require more fuel.

Dude I really don't know what to tell you...Getting a bigger turbo isn't going to help your gas milage...You're at 3500 RPM's at that point your gas milage is going to suck. 25-26 MPG is actaully pretty good. I drive 100 miles a day all freeway and I only get 22-23 MPG. I'm also at 3500 RPM's and sometimes a little more. If the car was running closer to 3000 RPM's or les you would be closer to 31-33 MPG. Good luck getting better gas milage other then slowing down.

I'm at about 3100-3200 rpms @ 70-73mph. I can't go much faster then that. the cops reallly love to pull over import car around here. I got pulled over last week and while the cop was radaring me a z-28 was passing by me. I asked the cop why he didn't pull over the z-28 that was passin me at the time and his reply was, " i saw you speeding." so, untill I can get a radar detector I'm kinda set at doing pretty close to the speed limit.

You have brought a very important subject. When my EVO was stock I used to get 200~230 mpg on normal slow driving. After my turbo I thought I will get hosed. However, I was way wrong belive me or no, I drove from SF Nor(cal) to LA and I used a tank and a bit. If I dont punch hard on my car I get over 300 miles per tank. Weird but true, good luck.

I could only wish for such mileage. I drive 25-500 miles a day with lots of freeway action, I average 18mpg. I also see 100+ a few times a day
