2009 Lancer GTS Carputer in the works

If anyone is interested in knowing what the push buttons look like behind your stock head unit heres an image.

Ok so heres the plan.

I will use the stock headunit, RF System to run audio through my AUX output from my computer.

I have two options a carputer with a lilliput touchscreen 7" which i already own or an HTC Shift computer custom mounted straight into the dash (has touchscreen and vista on it already)

The shift computer is 8.15" x 5.08" x 0.98",
where as my screen is W 7 3/4" X H 4 1/2" X D 1 3/8"

So were looking at .4" Wider and .58" taller but .4" less in depth.
I am not sure what the maximum dimensions are for our din but there is a possibility of custom mounting the PC straight into the dash.

Either way I will take out the circuit boards from the stock headunit and have them mounted down behind the AC controls along with the headunit (as another member has already proven works) and hardwire 2 push buttons, one to Power and the other to the CD button to turn on auxiliary.

If i ever have to disconnect my battery I will have to go in and change my settings back but it wont be too difficult because everything is going to be mounted so i will just need to remove my scosche dash kit and turn the potentiometer (controls volume and the other knob for tuning etc..) to the settings I need (LCD will remain in car also).

The htc shift has one usb 2.0 slot that will run to a usb 2.0 hub to connect the dvd drive i bought, a gps, and a external hdd.

I am not sure how this will all work but this is the plan I will update later.

7" touchscreen should be in on friday
touchscreen double din conversion kit friday
Scosche Dash Kit Friday
Dvd Rom drive Next tuesday

Went to radio shack and found "project enclosures / boxes"
Basically they are abs plastic boxes used to mount and secure circuit boards. I will use one of these to mount the face plate circuit board in and secure it somewhere behind the dash.

Installation will begin saturday and will probably carry into sunday
(pending the arrival of parts)

few pics, more later once scosche dash kit comes in

So the scosche dash kit did not come in friday, but I went ahead with the install anyway.

I hardwired 2 push buttons onto the ckt board on the back of the radio face plate, one to the volume knob (power) and one to cd (to turn AUX on).

To get power I tapped into the 12v accessory with a seperate inline fuse to power the screen and computer.

I mounted the circuit board for the radio face plate right under the screen by using a dremel to cut into the car about a 1"X1" square right near the bottom where the stock radio gets screwed in. This allowed the circuit board to slide in and still gave just enough space to mount down the screen.

everything works great sound is awesome.

the only bad thing is, I broke my LCD screen from the oem face plate, its hardwired to the board and can not be disconnected, but other than that everything is good.

Project cost :

Screen : 175
Screeen Mount Kit : 35
Computer : Free
Dash Kit : 35
DVD Rom : 22
Connectors, Tape etc : 25
USB Hub: 5.00

Total : 297.00

MUCH cheaper than OEM navigation, and for those who dont have a computer, any ultra mobile pc such as those with the intel atom processor will work and can be bought for about <500. Even an asus eepc would work.

So even with the cost of a computer you would stil be way below OEM navigation costs.

should have some pics up tonight

everything is complete now i have to figure out how to tie down the wires in the glove box.

originally i planned to power the laptop charger from the 12V cig lighter but I remembered the buzzing I would get when my ipod was plugged in to AUX and charging at the same time.

I tested the laptop plugged into the 12V cig lighter and the 12V lighter in the console and only the one near the ac controls causes a buzzing. So i will plug my laptop into the console (basically I have to take the whole thing apart again).

If anyone has any suggestions as to how to get a cig adapter from the console to the glove box please let me know. (of course I mean without taking the radio out again)

Lancer0220,
Are you going to use the HTC Shift computer as your main radio/music server? (no other head unit)
My setup that has been scattered around the house is still being tweaked before I install it.
It consists of the following:
1.6 gig Atom processor with 1 gig of DDR2
60 Solid state hard drive
DVD/CD slot load drive
WiFi
Bluetooth for phone
Space navigator remote
8" lilliput touchscreen behind the scotch dash kit
XP home
Centrafuse front-end

Any reason why you didn't choose a modular PC setup?

Brian,

I am using the stock head unit with rockford fosgate system with my HTC Shift.

I am using the AUX input of the stock head unit, basically my HTC shift is an IPOD to my headunit, controlled by the touch screen.

I went this route only for simplification and $, dont get me wrong the HTC Shift is $$$ but it isnt exactly mine, it belongs to my work and when they need it back I will purchase one of the new ultra mini pc's that have XP and run about 299.99 (and use the same intel Atom processor you are using), I kind of want to get one of those anyway because the HTC Shift has Vista and i cant change it since its not mine.

I am using an ultra mobile pc because i want to be able to remove my computer from my car if I am ever going out of town or when i want to update my music etc...I can pick up my wifi from outside the HTC Shift but when its hot/cold I'd rather do all the software updates from the comfort of my sofa.

Oh and I am running roadrunner as my front end, works ok with vista as long as you down grade to winamp 2.95 (old skool!!!). Yea this took me like 4 days to figure out, winamp 5.XX blows in vista and causes all sorts of screw ups for roadrunner...

Cool, the $299 pc you speak of must be a Eee box. That’s a good choose from what I've read. Good luck!
