Upper pad/foam on inner part of the door trim

Does anyone know what the foam/pad on the inner part of the back door purpose is? I have a 2012 Lancer Gt and want to sound deaden my doors. There is a huge hole towards the back that right not the plastic is covering but i would need to take it out to install the sound deadening material. The door trim would not clip with the foam/pad on the door trim. I have attached a picture to show where the foam goes into. Thanks.
