go to your local discount auto parts or advanced auto parts, and pick up some spray by Duplicolor, it actually says that there is in no need for primer, sanding etc. etc. just read the labels you'll find the right one..
sand it first withat least 600 sand paper and then wipe it clean then it depends on how u want to make it some out shinny aor flat ethey way i would spray 2 coats sand between then make a final 2 more coats then seal it so u can clean it and stop any dmg from use or sun..
no matter what the can of paint says you should always rough up smooth non-porous surfaces before painting. the only thing I know of that is designed to be put on a smooth surface is gripper. you can get it home depot. It's used for painting/prepping bathroom tile.
u dont have to sand cuz some of the plastic pieces are textured and u cant get in the groves. i didnt and i used krylon fusion. ive painted my interior 3 times. once with regular paint and it chipped everytime u hit it and then i took all the pieces and sandblaste the paint off then used fusion and when i wanted to change the color again i took it back to sandblast and the color wouldnt come off. thats how good it holds. it only roughened the paint so use that and u wont go wrong.

The other good reason to sand the surface is that it also helps to remove any silicon based polishes and waxes - I personally would give it a light - medium sand then use a plastic primer then the colour coat then the clear coat..
But it is up to you I tend to go over board to make sure that it is done 100% and not have to go back and fix chips it is the same when you reinstall that parts many people will do the strip out paint and replace all within 6 hours I usually allow 24hours just for the dry time so the paint does not "bruise" when pushed back into place plus this gives you enough time to use a mild polish to remove any small imperfections and bring a better gloss out

thats exactly why I am suggesting you sand first. Try sanding your next xbox before you paint, then let the paint cure and give it a good wack. I bet it will be much harder for you to get the paint off, if you could at all without gouging it.
