Ported Sub Enclosure Question
I'm currently building a box for my sub. Below is the link to the diagram of the box I'm building. I'm doing the ported one at the bottom of the page. My question is if I should put filler in the box or leave it empty. JL Audio doesn't state whether to add filler or not. And if anyone can recommend different fillers with reason why one might be better than another would be helpful also.

use poly fiber fill. DONT USE FIBERGLASS INSULATION!!! polyfiber fill is pillow stuffing you can find at any craft store or at walmart.
the reasoning for the fill is to eliminate "standing waves" of the subwoofer. the bass will sound deeper and cleaner. not so "boxey" sounding. it also helps trick the sub in to thinking it is in a slightly larger box by absorbing the standing waves. its good insurance for sound if your box is not exactly perfect.
also, when making the box, make sure you glue the joints together before nailing or screwing them together, then silicone the seams on the inside for added protection. this will help with the rigidity of the box.
good luck.

Do I need to worry about the fill running out through the port? I've messed around with that polyfiber fill before and I don't see it running away on me, but then again I've never used it in a sound box before either. Just to be sure I was thinking of putting some mesh at the far end of the port inside the box. Is this even necessary?

Oh and also, just how compact should I be filling the box with this stuff? Are we talking just put in enough so it fills the box, do I pack it in their real tight, or maybe a somewhere inbetween?
And will there be any issues with the fill being up against the sub or does the sub need some kind of buffer between itself anf the filler?

just enough to fill the box. dont worry about it touching the sub. no need to put a mesh for the port either. dont over pack the box, just enough so that it fills the box and you can easily place the sub in the box without disturbing the speaker.

Yes that is what I have. I only have one though, with the JL 500/1 amp pushing it.
