Rather than sensing the voltage on the control valve wire, I was going to try hooking up the LED to power and then to the control valve wire, letting the ECU ground the LED same as it grounds the circuit for the control valve. The LED should light up when the control valve is activated. As long as you power the LED from the same source the control valve, you don't have to worry about isolating the circuits.

Just a thought.
From what it sounds like, based on what Diavlo said, the control valve actually works oppositely. Power is cut off when the switchover happens, so in the setup you're thinking about, the light would turn off when MIVEC hits.

The wiring diagram I have says there's always power to the valve, the ECU just turns on/off the ground. If you're reading voltage on the wire when that happens, it'll go from +12v with the ground disconnected to 0v when the ECU connects the ground.

One of these days, I'll have to try it out and see. Of course, it's not going to happen if I'm working 75+ hours a week. I put in 77.25 hours last week.

this is awesome. since wiring is the one thing in my car a feel really comfortable touching without having a mechanic looking over my shoulder im going to do something with this. Hope otter can find the wire inside the car somewhere, and does anyone know where to get a mivec dash piece to replace the one that says lancer??

I had tried to do it without a relay, but what happened was the LED would come on then go off when MIVEC came on.

And yes, the main point of this, aside from looking quite cool, is I get about 35mpg when driving off-mivec. Its nice and easy now to keep out of it, without having to check my rpm all the time, and even then, sometimes it doesnt go off at 3500rpm, it seems to vary between 3200 and 3700rpm, yet it always comes on at 3500rpm.

Answered my own question.

Another one though, how much current to the relay can that wire handle? i happened to have a relay lying around, but its rather large.

Or try to use the NC contact on your relay !

If possable you should hook up a shift light inside the same gage. First MIVEC comes on then a single LED at 6300rpm or where ever you set it.

that's pretty freakin' innovative!!!
It would look pretty sweet fabricated into the middle of the dash some place too. just so you don't have to take up a pod.
Nice job Diavlo!

This reminds me of a video I saw a long time ago. Some guy hooked up his windshield washer LED's to light up when Vtec engaged. People called him a ricer. Why is this different?

Not hating, just asking why you'd wanna know when MIVEC is activated.

How about, because I like fiddling and like seeing IF I could do it? Whether it was the engine swap, or this gauge, I wanted to see if I could do it, and have fun working out how to do it. If I wanted the end result only it'd be no fun, and I would have just bought a better car!

you gotta do what you gotta do. you will see for yourself how many people open there pie holes without reading a whole thread. I think there is one thread on this site that people are actually ok with you posting without reading it, ATTN: POST ****** in off topic. Although if I remember the rules it's required reading for off topic n00bs.
