Where do I start?

The oh so typical question from a NOOB. Unfortunately I am a NOOB when it comes to forced induction but I have done a bit of research into running forced induction. First of all I will say what I wish to achieve from a turbo set up.
  • I do not want a "what ever I can get" set up
  • I want to run about 200-220 whp
  • Run about 4-6psi
  • Do not decrease much drivability of the vehicle where it is my daily driver
  • I have time to save up where I am in university but this also means that I cannot run a ridiculously expensive setup

My question is this:
Where did you begin? Did you buy a turbo and go from there or?

For me, the best way to start my own project is to learn from other people. I would like to know where you started because forced induction is so intimidating :P.

My current set up is simple:
ACT stage 1 clutch
RRM Short Throw is on the way.
Ground Control Coilover Sleeves with Eibach Springs (once my syncros are done)
Nothing done to engine

I am currently following cranswicks build thread and am learning as I go.
I know this is a fairly vague opening to a topic but all I want to know is what you did.

Slightly random and off topic, but hey...welcome fellow newf. What part of Newfoundland are you from?

That aside, I don't have a boosted ralliart, but if it were me, id start with the constants...turbo manifold, intercooler, intercooler piping. Then get into researching turbos themselves, and figure out what one will best suit what you are trying to accomplish....

I'm sure there are many more on the boards that can go further in depth on this topic... This is just my thoughts...

lots of research, i described my motives in my thread as to why i decided on the setup i did, and things will be coming together in the very near future, so stay tuned, and don't hesitate to ask any questions.

Yea I have been reading yours and might I add, its coming along great. Your thread is really the only thing that I have been going by. Unfortunately I have no access nor the skills to manufacture parts.

Thanks for the welcoming. I live in Paradise (don't let it fool you :P).

What I was thinking about doing was getting the computer from RRM for the turbo:
http://roadracemotorsports.com/store...roducts_id=767
And then look for a manifold and the constants such as what you, roblaza, said.

Are there any other brands of computers other then RRM??

There's always hackish... He's in these boards. Talk to him, I'm sure he's got something up his sleeve for you, as he has for a lot of other members on the boards.

I may have taken my first step into my build. My good buddy works at a Subaru dealership and got a turbo off a Legacy GT (2.5T) which uses the same turbo assembly as the WRX. The turbo is in working order and the only reason it was replaced was because the whole engine was in the Legacy. He said if the turbo will work then its mine, no cost; in other words, I really want this to work lol. The turbo is made by IHI, the model is RHF5H and has the part number14411AA510. What should I look into first to see if this turbo will work? Orientation, fitment, clearance?

Here are some pictures of the turbo.

Would anybody be able to tell me if I am missing any pieces? I am thinking I am missing something where the downpipe hooks up. For whatever reason, I don't know. Just seems like I am.

looks like it all there, but you're stuck with that inlet flange if you use that turbo, so when it blows you'll need to replace it with the same type. i would imagine they are fairly common.

That is why I am thinking of using this as my turbo. It should be a fairly common turbo because there are a lot of WRX's going around and people are always looking to upgrade which means that they will be replacing turbos.

I was going to message you earlier today but I was the only person in parts for the dealership so I ended up being super busy. I am gonna look around locally and see if someone can make a header to fit this turbo. I will not find a header to fit this for my car, it's highly improbable. Still, let me know if come across someone who will fabricate me one. Like I said before, this project is no where near being rushed. I am taking my time and hopefully doing it right.

Believe it or not, since my car's been back on the road, i've put about 7,000km on it, and no problems with the clutch, and i've tracked, and hammered on it.

what pressure plate is causing the problems?

Your best bet as far as a manifold would be to buy a pre-built manifold and just have the flange replaced, or an adapter made. If you want to go that route, shoot me a PM.

I have had nothing but bad luck with ACT and upgraded to a Stage 3 CM because ACTs cant handle my car for some reason. Ive gone through 2 stage 1s and 3 stage 3s in 5 years. Between drag racing, road racing, and autox they dont stand up to higher trq. Now you can go any route you want which all depends on your spending budget.
