While searching the web for information about our mass-air sensor, I found this diagram of the Variable Valve Timing system Mitsubishi devised. IIRC, the new Evo has variable valve timing...

I was under the impression that our MIVEC only controls valve lift, not timing. The Evo's controls timing. If you look closely at the diagram, you can see the bulky cam pulley which incorporates the variable timing mechanism. Our cars have just a simple, solid pulley.
