yo help a noob out - Downpipe/cat question
Ok I tried the search, didn't find specifics. I'm going to get the rrm dp soon and many have mentioned the need for a high flow cat. My question is simply this - if i purchase the dp and head to the shop, will they likely have a selection of cats, including a hi flow choice for my car that I can just pickup there? I've read people discussing just tossing on a high flow cat (which I'd like to do) but im unclear about whether I need to do more homework, purchase the cat and bring them both in at install time. If this isn't something the shop'll have readily available for me, anyone suggest a particular cat? Only one I've heard mention of would be magnaflows....? thanks in advance, and yes, I'm really this dumb.
Most muffler shops should have cats (maybe dogs too)
They are generally speaking sized for the pipe size, not for a specific application, when you are talking about high flow. Ours was in the dp, which is why you need one after buying the downpipe. That and so your car doesn't sound like a Honda.

Cats and Dogs!
That first part should go in your sig
If you get a catback the gains won't be the same (it does sound like a honda
) but all you have to get is a muffler with a deep sound and it'll make it better. I wouldn't suggest you get a cat unless its required by the state laws.

It's not that I'm concerned with the CEL, I'm more concerned with passing emissions. I don't take my car to the track enough to justify not having a cat at all. Not meaning to attack anyone else at all I just think all in all I would prefer to just run a cat as opposed to not running one. If I am not mistaken, it's ILLEGAL in all 50 states to not have one for whatever that's worth.
you're not mistaken but here in P.R when you buy a new car you don't have to take it to inspection the first year , so I still have another year to go without cat ( i thought it might be the same with you guys). But yeah if you're concerned just go with the cat and save yourself some headaches
.
I had the cel go on with my dp and cel eliminator, we added a 2nd cel eliminator and that fixed the propblem.. it hasn't come back one since then.
Add a free flow exhaust and you'll be super pleased with the gains but if you like a quiet ride, be prepared for a shock. Its loud.. really loud.
As long as the revs stay low, i change gears fast, i can drive out to the hwy , once on the onramp i downshift and make all kinds on noise. I have to avoid waking the neighborhood up (5 am)..

Okay here's the easiest solution to your problem about a particular shop having the hi-flow in stock or if you need to bring one or if you CAN bring one in to have installed.
Not being ignorant here but there is really only one way to find out for sure.....
Call the shop and ask.
Yep, it's just that easy! Oh and yes it is illegal to tamper with your emmision systems on road cars. The highflow cat is really a grey area as far as the Feds are concerned so you might have to run over a rock and put a hole in your stock cat to get a shop to replace it. It's really a shop to shop decision as the fines are rather stiff for non compliance so if the shop manager isn't sure.... you better bet he'll say NO!
Let us know how the phone call turns out.

Thanks for all the input. What I'll likely do is just get the header/cat combo and then grab the catback. I'll get the header/cat installed first and then have a shop do the catback as they shouldn't have any complaints about the setup by then....I should hope....
