My Clutch Job

Mods, I'm not sure if this is where it would go.. but since its drivetrain related and its not so much your average conversation i assumed it would go under advanced.

As most of you know, I have purchased the Works Stage 1 clutch. First off I want to comment on the speed Works shows when I had it shipped over here. I'm not sure where it came from, but it litterally took about 4 days for the clutch to arrive whereas some of my other packages I've ordered from various websites takes weeks. Unfortunately I did NOT take any photo's of the clutch and pressure plate, etc. The car is currently at the shop getting worked on and they are keeping the original clutch and parts for me to examine. I will take photo's of that if you guys want.

One problem I have encountered was my Slave cylinder is leaking, which I was just told about. It has a huge wet spot around it, but i'm not sure where its leaking. The shop called me and told me they located a part for around 90-95$ since its a dealerpart. I told them to go for it since i need the car back ASAP and well, if it needs to be done then it needs to be done. I don't really have time to look around for parts either. (yet i can make this thread.. Spins4 I wish you still worked at the dealer!!) I will be keeping the old part that's leaking to tear apart and see what's wrong with it.

Hopefully everything else goes smoothly with the install and that my bank account will have some remnants left... I'll keep you guys posted.
Cost:
Clutch - 430$
(Includes all the parts needed)
Flywheel Resurfacing - 78$
Labor - 430$
Slave Cylinder - 95$
Labor - unkown

Total - Well over 500$... damnit...

Moved here, since this topic doesn't really discuss technical issues.

The slave cylinder is really easy to replace, it's just the thing that pushes on the release fork at the front of the transmission. Besides that, I'm also finding that clutches are expensive to replace, even without paying labor. Here's the breakdown of mine (installing in a week with a friend)

Clutch (CM stg 1) = $330 shipped
Flywheel resurface = $48
Labor = Beer

Optional things I'm doing:
Replacement release fork and fulcrum = $41 (these are both potential wear parts)
Extra OEM Flywheel (since I can't pull my flywheel then drive my car to the machine shop to have it resurfaced ) = $80 shipped

So, for a DIY clutch job, I'm in $500, and that doesn't include the cost of beer. I'll also try to sell my flywheel once it's out of the car, in case someone else needs an extra OEM one for resurfacing.

Where'd you get the flywheel for $80? I might go back to this route. I might also upgrade to an Act 6-puck. I still get slippage when I gun it going up a hill.

About the leaky clutch master cylinder, RRM had two guys working on mine and both said it was a b!tch to replace because of it's placement against the firewall and being so close to the inside fender. This has been coming up a lot lately with us older RA's and seems to be a weak link. Of course adding a stage1+ clutch probably doesn't help matters!

He said it's just his slave that's leaking, which is really easy to replace.

As for the flywheel, I just made a WTB thread and put it in my sig with an offer of $50 + ship, and within a few days someone contacted me. Sucks that he was in Canada, so shipping was a bit more expensive, but it's worth it.

yes definitely saves time since you're doing the install yourself.

The slave cylinder is a quick fix, if it were my master cylinder i think it would cost a lot more than 95$... I'm just mad that I have to spend more, I'm already breaking my bank right now.

My MASTER cilinder ran me $105, original part, so 95 for a replacement SLAVE sounds a bit steep

Master and slave cylinders really aren't all that different in design, doesn't surprise me that they'd be close in price.

Yeah, sorry, mis-read again. I gotta stop posting so damn late. But, yeah, my master clutch cylinder was about $100 too.

When I had to replace the slave cylinder in my RA, I got the new one from my dealer for $63.

It took about 10 minutes to install and bleed.

Maybe its 95$ with the labor included.. The car's done now, I have to go pick it up and I'll try to come up with 500 miles this weekend but i find it rare. I normally put on about 300 miles a week so 500 in 2 days is pushing it. Plus its 500 city right?

Total came out to be around 638$ or something like that. The shop i went to is a great shop, he keeps calling me every 2 hours with updates on how the car was going, it just took so long because he's short 2 guys and all his bays are full of jobs needed to be tended to so i was last in line. He kept ALL the parts he took out and replaced for me, so i'll bring them home, clean em' up and take some photos.

Well I have the car now but I'm taking it easy on the car. (Break in period)
I've noticed that when i try to start from a dead stop everyonce in a while I feel a grinding feeling while releasing the clutch. I feel it in the shift knob as well. Not sure what it is, maybe its just something since i'm not used to the clutch.

Other than that I have the parts in my trunk, I'll take photo's when I get a chance.

EDIT:

Hey anyone know if i'm supposed to get a "whirring" sound from the drivetrain when not in gear just idling and when coasting in gear... And on top of that I already have some chatter, sounds like the throw out bearing. I'm really getting pissed off, I went back to the shop today and they said they didn't hear anything and that it was all normal. Please guys anything?
