i did my timing belt yesterday and had this same problem around 3-4k rpm i read the forums and everything lines up on the mark.. my rear balance shaft pulley lines up and i tried to set it a half tooth before but the grooves dont match it only goes one full tooth advanced or one tooth retard i put it one tooth advanced and now the vibration is at 5-6k rpm... i couldnt find the access port for the rear shaft but i see a gear looking plug above the front one i understand it could be off 360... car runs great im about to take it apart for the third time to take pics and try to align it once more... any advice would be great thanks!

**Edit;

wow I really need to read more closely... k,
the back balance shaft, as long as its aligned with the timing mark, your ok. I find no difference if one tooth advanced, or behind. pick whatever is closer to the timing mark. also, there is no access port.

the front shaft, if there is unusual vibration, is probably off by 180 degrees. the access port, plug, is on the front of the engine, about middle, same level as the front balance shaft below the starter (pretty much behind the downpipe(see pdf)). you need to lay underneath and look. it doesnt mount anything, it just plugs the access hole so it'll look just like a bolt in the engine block.
i stuck a big fat nail in there. if u cant get the nail or whatever you use into the hole without hitting metal, the shaft is probably off 180 degrees. rotate the front balance shaft with the belt off 360 degrees, line it up with the timing mark, and stick the nail or whatever in there again to test.
i would suggest you leave the nail or whatever in there till u got the belt on so that the front balance shaft is only allowed to spin a few degrees left or right before hitting the nail or whatever.
DO NOT forget to take it out again before you start the engine.

oil sits in the pan, you should be OK, it shouldn't come flyin' out of there like the drain plug...

if oil comes out your opening the wrong bolt. verify with the pdf from the service manual I posted.

when u say vibration u mean like the car shakes, and u KNOW somethign is way wrong?.....or like it just feels off but its more like your phone is vibrating(very light..)..?

i did my timing belt w/ otter i think about a year ago and i was worried there was somthing off but really its more like the latter i described...its very light, kinda vibrating/buzzing and at probably ~3-4k rpm...i told him about it we drove it some...and figured its just the engine working properly..seeing as how my belts already had ~100k mi on them, probably stretched etc...

just make sure its actually an issue, before you worry about it...give it a little time...i gave it about a week before i told otter....then it took about another week to get to his place n check it out and assume its just normal..(now i just need to do the valve adjustment...its starting to click reall loud...u can defenetly tell its way off..lol)

Thanks!!! The PDF helped a whole lot I found the hole When you first said it was underneath the starter.. it was off 360 thanks thomar.. my teacher said it was running fine to him and couldn't notice the vibration but I could feel the gas pedal vibrate and the engine (if that makes sense) vibrate more.. and nekkilad it wasn't much where if you didn't ride in the car before you would think its fine

the motor would work fine with no balance shafts at all, it's just that inline 4's have a tendency to vibrate quite a bit, so they use balance shafts to dampen it, most people don't want a new car that shakes like a **** so it's a comfort and smooth ride kinda of thing... the people who don't care get urethane mounts and delete the balance shaft anyway.

if the balance shaft is out of phase, it only adds to the vibration which is worse than having no shaft at all...

that how mine is...so now thinking about it it could be possible its out...but then again...i did it w/ otter...(or should i say....otter did it w/ me..lol)...im sure its ok he said it so i believe it...and honestly im used to it now so i dont see an issue if it IS off..lol

before we even took the belt off tho, he made sure to line up all the marks and we made sure nothiong moved at all before during of after putting the belts on...(xept of course the pulleys we replaced..)...all the marks were set properly, and nothing moved...so i still think its ok either way...

Yea I made sure everthong was lined up as well I don't even know how it got turned 360° off.. I'm not sure it'll work but you can take the top cover off to see the camshaft mark and turn the motor til the crank n camshaft both line up and check the access port... I don't doubt otter but anything can happen

The front balance shaft is an easy thing to get wrong. It really is. You're not looking for a second and the damn thing spins on ya.
