Upgrading Valve Springs

This question is aimed specifically at those who have installed an aftermarket cam (be it a regrind, RPW, or RRM) in their 4G69.

Who here has done it, and what did you use? Or did you even bother?

I'm FINALLY good to go on servicing the hell out of my car and the first thing I'm looking forward to is getting my camshaft installed with the t-belt/water pump

Can anyone confirm whether the Supertech products have a green light for our application?

SPRK-M1007S is their single valve spring

SPRK-M1007D is their dual valve spring

(there is another part#, or it is one out of these two, that have been discontinued... not sure yet..)

I'm work now so can't spend too long coming up with specs for the springs.

If anyone has any knowledge on the stock valve springs, and what a good replacement would be (not too positive if the ones pointed out above would be too hardcore or not) please let me know

to my knowledge there are no aftermarket valve springs that are tested and guaranteed for our motor...

When I had my head getting ported and polished ,I went through this. Our valve springs are a pretty custom non-interchangeable set. When mitsu made our motors they made everything bigger than the 4g64, when they did this , it cut us out of the aftermarket Now they can be custom made but unless your building a 500+hp motor I don't see it being worth the trouble. Something Joe did was had some shims installed under the springs to make them a slight bit stiffer, #10 ss washers if I remember correctly. The worlds fastest ralliart had the oem cam, valves, and valve springs

I just had my answers questions by the two most knowledgeable RA owners on EvoM. Nice. haha.

Alright, that's good to know.

Best idea would probably would be to get a new set of OEM's and shim them up, then?

As long as the valve springs are within spec then there's no need to get new ones. As for the shims , you wouldn't even notice if they were in or not. It's your call.

you probably won't run into valve float unless you have a quite agressive cam profile...

Ah, I was looking as a precaution is all. Cams and springs go together like PB&J haha, but by the sound of things, maybe not for these cars.

I did some more digging around here and found that way back when there were some guys had issues with the RRM stage 2 cam, which could have been why it was discontinued (or it could have been too costly, or a lack of interest in the market), but my best guess would be that any issues were caused by using OG springs with the more aggressive cam profile.

When I called to ask RRM about it a long time ago to get filled in (see if they could give me I/E specs, a recommend on their P'n'P head etc) they said they didn't have any specs they could give me after the sublet machine shop went under, but I wouldn't need to worry about the valve train or valve float unless the cam was a stage 3 - which according to the numbers I got back from the performance machine shop, it's not that kind of aggressive, but still aggressive enough.

Won't really know until it's in

The performance shop said I shouldn't need to worry about valve train upgrades either, but did recommend replacing the springs anyway to be preventative.

I don't see any harm in shimming the springs just in case. Sounds like the best option to stiffen things up a little

I picked up the RRM cam sometime last year and haven't had any issues that I'm aware of in terms of springs going bad. When I called RRM before purchasing they reassured me there wasn't any issues in terms of valve float like you previously said due to it not being an overly agressive profile. I'm running the RRM head as well so its their valve springs that went into my engine so I can only assume it they would be OEM since there aren't aftermarket ones readily available for the engine.

The issues if IIRC were combining the rrm cam with turbo.

Do you have any vids of your car running? I've only been able to imagine how the cam performs, aside from seeing a regrind/custom cam vid that went up awhile ago.

If you do, but don't want to post, hit me with a PM (would be much appreciated)

Just watched this again at work with my headphones on this time around - MIVEC certainly seems to get hella loud with that cam haha. Neat.

Didn't catch the numbers off the dyno, what did your car put down (with what mods) ?
