Hood scoop air intake problems?

Looking at getting the carbon fiber hood with the hood scoop to let more air into my engine bay and look cool but was thinking if it rains doesn't take mean a cold air intake sitting below the hood scoop would just be sucking in water? Or if I got the turbo done would the air filter just breathe in water and flood my intercooler/turbo? Or cold water on a hot exhaust manifold cracking it, any opinions or ways around this problem?

I have had the vented style hood for over 7 years and I live in Florida. My car has been through several hurricanes and I haven't had ANY water related problems, with the SRI , CAI, headers, or anything. Hell I'm still running the original alternator which I was told would fail soon after I got the hood

unless you submerge the air filter you won't take in enough water to hydrolock...

as far as the water on my turbo manifold, it just got rusty quick, lol

Ur manifold sits kinda low too and theres a guard on it i dont think youll have any problems. I myself am thinking of a custom hood now to find someone who could cut through it....

If it came to it I'd probably just make something to go over the intake when it rains if it does sit under the scoop,

The stock intake goes out towards the edge of the hood way past those vents, im not 100 were all the aftermarket ones do but i cant imagine its anywhere near those, thats sitting ruffly ontop of the engine or just about, from how it looks.

Agreed, that's why when I make my custom hood I was going to make an electronic actuating door for it so I can turn it on and off for rain, I might be doing this with my cai too (plan on having a cai and sri with a cut off to the cai for rain, the cai might even be sucking air directly from outside if i can swing it) with something like this

Sorry to thread jack, I just think the idea of a custom hood thats like 50 used from pick and pull and then some elbow grease and maybe 100 or 200 dollars is way cheaper than 450 for a premade hood.

seems like a lot of trouble for a bit of rain...i drive with a fully vented hood in pouring rain...no issues...and manifolds and exhaust parts will rust from getting hot alone...

But is ur intake anywhere near ur vents? and ur vents are mesh mine would basically be just about open unless i had it switched off, I wanted the intake to basically almost be sticking out above or almost above the hood sucking air straight in with no interference hopefully in the hopes of more hp (cold outside air+no interference+more direct route to intake mani)

But in the end yes its more work but I think it'll be a better finished product.

well you couldn't have the intake outside the engine bay if you want the option of closing the vent...and if you have the filter in the opening, the hot air leaving the engine bay would just soak into the filter anyway...your best bet is still a true cold air intake routed behind the bumper, or RalliartN's intake mod...

to answer your question, my intake filter is nowhere near the vent, and if it was, it would be way too close to the exhaust manifold...all evo hood are vented right above the exhaust manifold, not a good place for intake...and regardless of mesh, or open hole the amount of water that gets in would be the same...

to achieve that ur intake would need to be ~4in+ above the hood(why REAL hood scoops are huge and ridiculous looking)...below that theres not a significant ammount of fresh cold air...and once it gets into the piping it would start to get heated, maybe not much, but by the time it reaches the engine it might be same temp as w/ a sri or cai...for fresh, cold air your best bet would be a CAI, and as ghetto as it sounds without metal piping for less heatsoak...(pvc works great but most often it looks so bad)
and if ur aiming for ram-air ud need to be going 200+ mph for any noticeable effect...

my $.02....(somebody please correct me if im wrong..)

My plan was to have a box built around it so basically without the box it look like its coming out through a hole having the filter not sucking any air from the engine bay. Then the box would help keep random damage like bird poop etc from hitting the filter when not driving and then the opening door is at the end of the box, I've started to sketch it out today on how exactly I want to do it, I might make a thread if I start to get some solid measurements. It would also be to the side near the driver which wouldn't be the funnest way to drive with it blocking ur view but I was gona deal with it, I also though of relocating it somewhere else like out of the bumper or somewhere ( i think i saw a 350/370z with an intake like that)

it just seems like a lot of money, and custom work, for little to no difference in performance, at a huge sacrifice in the aesthetics department...it doesn't jive

Here's a 5 year old thread about when I made a REAL CAI
