I am new to this forum, my question is... Will a 5 speed manual transmission from a 2003 Lancer OZ Rally swap to a 2004 Lancer Ralliart that currently has a 5 speed manual transmission in it? Thank you.

the gear ratios are different...and so is the bell housing.

Alright. Well this brings me to a new problem.... My transmission makes a grinding/humming noise, like a bearing is bad. The noise only occurs when you are in gear driving and the engine is under torque. Otherwise there is no noise. What could it be?

same noise is all gears? does the noise change pitch as the gears speed up? does it change with vehicle speed?

Same noise in all gears, but isn't as loud the higher the gear. Loudest in first, quietest in 5th.

at what rpm?

At all rpms. But the harder you accelerate the more prevelant it is.

if you hold the clutch in, or put it in neutral, and rev the engine, the is no noise, correct? If the noise doesn't change when turning either, then it is likely a bearing...

There is no noise when pressing the clutch or having it in neutral and reving it. Noise does not change when turning. I also believe it is a bearing. But I'm not very knowledgeable of transmissions and don't know where to look or where to start.

my bet is either the input shaft bearing on the splined side, or the output shaft bearing closest to the engine...I've never seen the other two fail...

Okay, thank you. Other people have said the pilot bearing, or the throw out bearing. But like I said I don't know enough about transmissions to make an informed opinion/decision.

well here's the thing...who are these people? I mean, I'm not exactly a certified mechanic, but I do know that the 4G69/F5M42 combination does not use a pilot bearing, it's a bushing...and if your throw out bearing makes noise only while accelerating, then it's not your throw out bearing. If the clutch release system is bled and adjusted properly, the throw out bearing should not be doing or touching anything when not in use...

what you describe sounds more like a shaft bearing because when you accelerate, the spiral cut gears when torque is a applied, it will force the shafts laterally. so if there is a damaged or worn bearing the noise is more pronounced when a greater lateral force is applied to it...same as a bad wheel bearing getting louder while turning one direction, and not the other.

I would actually bet that it's the output shaft bearing closest to the engine, as normally the input shaft bearing just makes noise all the time....

Okay thank you. With a hoist and a tranny jack how difficult would it be to change it?

a whole transmission assembly, or just the bearings? pulling the tranny is pretty easy, other than it being fairly heavy...splitting it and replacing bearings is a little more advanced...then if you have worn synchros you'll want to do them as well, which is again, more advanced...

With a hoist and transmission jack you have car mechanic heaven, much of the headaches are gone right there.
