BAD grinding from 3rd to 2nd

i used to have a problem grinding when going from 1st to 2nd, i now installed B&M precision short Shifter BM45186 (VERY AWESOME UPGRADE. throw cut in half) But its been about a week since the upgrade and all of a sudden I'm getting a bad grinding when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd when driving enthousiastically(heel toe) . it rarely does it when driving slow. Anyone else with anything like this. I have 8000 KM, not much but well broken in. I will have my tranny oil changed ASAP to synthetic.....anyone else

thanks

maybe recheck to make sure everything is good and tight on your b&m install, other than that i cant think of much...i still have that darn grind from 1-2, it seems to happen when you redline, i dont think the clutch is strrong enough to engage when rpms are at or slightly above redline

your engine is still young. synthetic is for older engines.

First off, he's talking about his transmission fluid, not the engine oil.

Second, synthetic is not just for "older engines", any engine can use it. In fact, you can void the warranty on an EVO by using conventional oil in it.

I plan on switching over to synthetic oil as soon as my car's break-in period is done.

Yes, I'm matching the REVs when I down shift, there is defenitely something wrong. As for grinding from 1st to 2nd, i used to have that problem until i installed the short shifrter, but before i did so, the grinding was very bad...i thought it was my timing....and now with the shorter throw, it does not happen unless I'm being stupid... so no one else has my problem, gonna go see the dealer this week

No problem from 3rd to 2nd. Back when I first started driving stick I would get it from 1st - 2nd but only when driving really fast. I soon learned it was me and not the car. The shift from 1-2 is so fast that drivers (myself included) sometimes let their hands get ahead of the foot. I've been driving stick for about 13 years now and I don't do it anymore (well, once in a while) but that's usually what it is. On a rare occasion it could be syncros.

Ya, that's what I was gonna say, make sure the clutch is FULLY engaged before you try to slam the stick into gear or it will make a horrible grinding sound when the gears dont mesh and just grind the crap out of each other. Ive done it once or twice going from 3-4 racing just because that shift is so damn short and my legs are so damn long.

thanks for the replies,
But its defenitly not the clutching or shifting, it happens when I push hard and drive like an old lady. It seems as if something is not beeing di-engaged and keeps rotating...I think its the syncro...but I'm no mechanic. The only way I can manage not to get it to grind is, fully press the clutch, take it out of third, rev it up to match rpm, slown down, stick it into first, then it goes into second (no grinding), then I can release the clutch and drive again. So something is not letting go inside. Its going to go to the shop tomorrow and well see what they have to say. I hope its not a sign of bad things to come. and I wonder if tranny parts are available right now if something i broken??

I had something similar to that happen in my DSMs, twice.

First time, it was the clutch disc faces that had separated, and the pressure plate couldn't release far enough to clear it.

The second time, it was the springs in the clutch disc (the little coil springs near the center, not the flat springs between the faces) that had popped out, and were getting caught on the pressure plate.

Just something to look for.

the dealer finally had time to look at it. apparently I had to make an appointment a week in advance to get the tranny spacialist to look at it. But I found that when shifting from 3 rd to 2nd, I could get it not to grind by pushing it into the the gate for 1st gear and then down into 2nd with no grinding. So wich leads me to beleive its more of an adjustment issue rather than a major problem. So, it will be in the shop for a few days and they gave me a rental chev. cavalier FUNNN...will keep you posted

Still sounds kinda like your clutch isn't *quite* releasing all the way.

I got the call from the shop and they told me that the syncro in second gear is gone. they had to order one and it will here in about a week. So I now have the car back and I'm driving it as is untill they can get it fixed.....and when they do replace the parts I'm going to get them to change my gear box oil to REDLINE, I hear its good stuff. so I guess missing my shifts in second gear did break something, but i swear it was never right from the begining
