Gears won't go in while cold
Just changed my transmission fluid to amsoil gl4 75-90 gear old and installed under hood shifter bushings. This morning it was sorta cold around 30 and when I pulled out 2nd gear would not go in. And 3 barely did. When I went to shift out of first it felt terrible like jumpy later down the road everything went in but wasnt really smooth but worked. Any ways to fix this?

Here we go ....
Allegedly there are products that you can use that do not have this issue. Some are not gl4 spec however. Motorcraft has a gl4 that pours at -54 C so that may work better, I am yet to try it. On days like today when it is -20C here, everything is different till the car warms up I find, so I just keep the revs down and shift slowly until the car warms up. The only reason Amsoil GL4 is not in my gearbox now is because I could not get any in a timely manner when I last wanted to change the gear oil. I am using an AC Delco GL4 product and so far so good. See this thread for further information : https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/04...-really-4.html |
After changing out your gear oil it can be notchy for a short while afterward, and the gearbox can (and will) feel little sluggish and less responsive when temperatures drop. When it's as cold as you say (30F/-1C), just let the car warm up and take your time shifting. Might need to take a couple of days yet, still need a tad bit more time to see improvement. If you did this a short while ago and it's been notchy/sluggish since maybe try a different gear oil. I've heard good things about AC Delco GL4 and as far as I recall that's what I'm using as well.
It felt like -42C here on Sunday... that certainly made the car drive like a bag of you know what... |
Yeah when its way cold out mine is like that until it warms up. I usually do same as above let it warm up a little more and take it easy. I tend to go 1st to 3rd in the early AM. Also I'd say try when your gonna shift to push in clutch to shift rev your engine a little with clutch in then stop rev then change gears see if that helps might not be synchronizing perfect and that should help a lil to smooth it in gear.

I mean 2nd gear just would not go in it was terrible. I had to skip 2nd most the way down the road. My school isn't that far like 10 minutes away and it was somewhat decent by then.

this morning it was -2F(windchill -15F) where i live...
i got in the car and started it and it sounded like a diesel...tried to get into 1st and it was HARD to get into gear...but i got it in ater 2-3 tries...and 2nd wouldnt even go in... (i put in mobil 1 75-90 in the trans about 3 yrs ago...haven't changed it since...will once i fix the trans, to bg synchro shift...) i ended up just putting it in neutral and w/ ebrake on (sittign there) idling ~2kRPM till the gauge actually got to go over "C" on the temp gauge(~7 mins)...then i went thru the gears a few times while sitting there w/ the clutch held down...felt ok...so i figrued it was ok to drive...but everytime i coasted it sounded like a rodknock...:S can't wait till i get my trans rebuild done...(with TOB also...and clutch)...hopefully a lot of these noises will go away...i know cold will bring some back...but not this loud...(it shouldn't be not knocking in the trans anymore...the IS and TOB bearings are toast already)... |

I looked at a lot of threads before I bought the transmission fluid everyone was saying amsoil is good either amsoil or bg.
Also today leaving school it was around 40-45 F it was shifting sitting still good like normal but when I went to shift up the first time second wouldn't go in, I just straight skipped it the next couple times, but started going in after a couple blocks. Not smooth but it went in. Got to a friends house and let the car idle when I left it was shifting pretty good. My only bad shift is always 2nd gear. Always. It felt decent on the way home then randomly around a corner I had to downshift and it just went in like butter. Then after that it was decent. I don't get it. Edit Just searched up amsoil on here again and it still seems like its the fluid of choice along with redline? How would it destroy my transmission if so many people been using it? |
Just did a little more looking around and reading
Here's what's in right now http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produc...r-lube-75w-90/ I haven't even been using it a week yet I'd feel terrible wasting money like that and changing fluid already I live in sc and it isn't cold all the time here but is right now. If I go with redline mtl and mt 90 cocktail could I expect smoother and better shifts at colder temperatures? Am I using the wrong fluid? Here's what I'm looking at trying if I get enough input about which to use for my climate Bg syncro shift 2 https://secure.buschurracing.com/cat...roducts_id=825 And either straight mtl or a mixture depending on what I hear http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=46&pcid=7 http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=45&pcid=7 |

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/04...ll-really.html "so my tranny was ok becoming a little rough before i put the amsoil in, when i did use the amsoil i put the mtf which was the synchromesh gl4 that was the proper one for my car as well as the one you had in the pic, it did horrible just went down hill fast after i put amsoil in to the point where i could hardly get into 2nd gear, not realizing it was the amsoil change that made things worse i did the rebuild and again used the amsoil because i figured there a good company or so i have heard. After the rebuild and new amsoil mtf again it started ok and again just started to go downhill, so i put oem in today and right of the back noticed a much better improvement no problems from 1,2 as well as the other gears so ill drive it in for a bit and fingers crossed hopefully it doesn't go downhill again. somethign about the amsoil mtf just doesn't seem to work in our cars maybe like someone has said its too slippery and the gears cant slow down fast enough or properly." So you put in Amsoil MTF not once but twice, instead of what Mitsubishi and Amsoil say the RA should use, but the problem is Amsoil.{thumbdwn} How come I used Amsoil MTG without issue for 13 months ? |

i didn't have any problems with the amsoil, my only gripe with the amsoil is it didn't perform well when it got super hot, like race track hot, so maybe the same is true for the cold?
the redline MTL has been superb in all temperature extremes, i got the privilege of driving it in +30 degrees celcuis, and -12 degrees celcius...and it was flawless, so i definately recommend the MTL over the amsoil, but i didn't have any normal driving problems with the amsoil... |

All this took place before i really started on this site, i never had issues until i put the amsoil in and not realizing amsoil was the problem i used it again, still having the problem i put oem in and it worked much better again...so it wasn't the oil is what your saying?? im not the only person whose used the amsoil mtf and had problems, im not saying the companies **** im saying this oil in our trans just doesn't work right and it doesn't help that i drove it for a year with this mtf in it before i could do the synchros. All i can say is what ive seen in using the mtf, if i put oem in the trans instead of mtf at the beginning i would have been fine |
