I hear some of the new Alpine decks have built-in control for ipods - hook them up, and you can use the deck (or it's remote) to control the ipod. You should at least give those a look IMO.

Do you have the S&S package?

If yes, the new head unit will have to run an adaptor (the soundgate MITSRCVR for ex.) from its lineouts to the inputs of the amp underneath the driver seat.

If no, then the factory head unit drives your speakers. The installer will just use a new harness/harness adaptor to run the new head unit to the existing speakers.

Be careful when choosing an aftermarket receiver with factory speakers (especially non S&S)...any aftermarket head unit is vastly more powerful than the factory one, and can easily damage weaker factory speakers.

Hey... it's a good excuse to get good speakers!

They probably won't. They'll probably tell you that you have to rerun all the wiring and put in a new amplifier, which is BS. See someone's post above for where to get the adapter.

I thought about redoing my system.. i have the sub and amp and everything, but i'm just too lazy, and plus i don't think the stock S&S package is that bad. I kinda like being able to hear myself talk with the sub on, unlike my old car... even with the volume at 1 the sub was deafening..

yeah, I love the s&s package, but I wish the head unit had more functionality (satellite, mp3, etc...)

And the answer is... NO.. It wont affect anything. Its a pain in the *** to do and there will be new harnesses involved, but they should have those there... And it wont change your power output. My Boy is a mobile Audio Installer and He is doing the same for my car.. I am getting the Alpine Touch screen tho.. But still it doesnt matter what head unit,it wont change your output even with the S&S package. This Is is Exact words. And he has done a few Already. And He is MECP Certified.

I love my Best Buy discount. Most employees can get about 50% off on everything.

I'll second that... especially if you're not familiar with car stereos already. Crutchfield has infinitely good and helpful customer service. If you have any questions when installing, call them up. If you find a way to fry a head unit (unlikely) when installing, they'll send you a new one. They'll include, for free, all the parts necessary to connect the stereo you buy to the car you have, without question. You won't have to buy any extra harnesses or mounting hardware or anything - they'll just include it. They even send illustrated instructions on how to disassemble/assemble everything in your car.

They may cost a little more than most places, but not much, and it's certainly worth it when you start adding in $10 for this harness and $20 for this mounting kit, etc.
