All conventional oil comes with impurities. Stuff like sulfur, nitrogen based acids, and even super small rock particles won't comes out during refinement.

Impurities don't help engines EVER...

If you plan to keep this car beyond the warranty (like me) consider synthetic.

I'm not talking about dino oil vs synthetic. I'm talking about things like shavings or whatever to helps break in the engine.

I know that metal shavings are formed as the engine's broken in, I'm just wondering if the factory oil has anything in it to help the process along.

No, it doesn't. It's just thicker oil than you would use normally. They do this to PREVENT metal from shaving off.

The factory oil is the same. They put in an additive to help break in.

this leads into another oft-asked question. it's one that i can't find an answer to in the FAQ's either.

how long should you wait for the first oil change?

I worked Jiffy-Lube for about 4 years (high school and part of college) and i heard everything from within minutes of leaving the lot all the way up to 5k miles. of course, the typical corporate response from JLI was: as soon as possible.

so, here i am, with my first new car, and i just don't know when i should change the oil for the first time.

I don't think there is any correct answer for this...

Some changed it the same day they bought it
Others changed it at 500
Others changed it 5 times in the first 1000miles
Others changed it at 2500
Me and others changed it normally at 3000

It is really your preference, although I am sure you know from working at the Lube that an oil filter doesn't really start working until 1000miles. This also does depend on the filter too. A micron that catches oil at a higher micron level I assume would start working more quickly. Whatever helps you sleep at night. According to the service manual it says every 3750miles. After 3000 the oil looks a little thin, I would not want to wait that long even with Mobil 1.
