Not your normal AWD ralliart thread

I was thinking about this, I've seen a few threads on here about throwing the AWD system from the Evo onto a ralliart and how everybody says it's too expensive to do and you might as well get an Evo. And I'm certainly not interested in converting my Ralliart to AWD, considering I don't have any mods yet, but who's to say that one couldn't throw the AWD system from the Outlander onto a Ralliart; especially since it appears more then possible without breaking the bank. The stock Outlander LS is 19,050, with an auto transmission; the AWD auto transmission outlander is 20,950, or a difference of $1900 (necessary parts probably cost more, but even doubling the price still brings you about $6000 less then an Evo RS). The Outlander is built on the same platform as the Lancer, has the same engine as the Ralliart, and it looks like the transfer case tucks up nicely underneath (sp?) the Outlander chassis and doesn't stick out. It's already known compatible with auto trannys, and it appears (thanks to someone with an Outlander at cardomain) that the AWD system won't keel over and die when the RRM turbo kit is strapped to it. Obviously, even with a turbo, a system like this won't outclass an Evo, but with the turbo kit, a system like this should easily stomp a colbalt SS or a WRX.

But that would mean converting to automagic in order to get AWD. No thanks.

Interesting idea... but I still think that it would cost more to get the AWD and turbo kit on the RA than it would cost you to simply get an EVO. And remember that you'd never get anywhere near the performance of the EVO's AWD setup (think only of the superb diff. technology in there). Plus, it would still only handle like the RA, so in order to upgrade the hanling to handle your new power and traction, you'd have to bolt a brand new suspension under it. Should I go on?

Sorry if if I thrashed your dream of an AWD RA though... I'd really like to see someone with a lot of dough attempt this. It would be a really cool car, albeit also being a really costly project... Then again, some people invest the price thay paid for their car just to get them to look nice for some shows.

Well I already drive an auto so I find the concept intriguing; and I'm no mechanic so I can't say that you actually have to convert to auto, it's just compatible with an auto. I mean the biggest things on AWD are the transfer case and differentials right? Do they make that much difference what the tranny is?

There's actually somewhat of a chance that the OEM tranny can be used with the Outlander's setup. To answer the rest of your question, remember that modern AWD systems are electronically controlled, so some electronics would also have to be transplanted... and that can be really messy unless you know exactly what you're doing. And keep in mind that talented technicians also ask for a nice lump of money to do such a special project.

$$$ It's all a question of dough man...

What a waste of money to still end up owning a Geo...

It would almost certainly be cool, but if it were to be done, I think that the Outlander system would be the easier of the two since it's already been mated to both the platform AND drivetrain; whereas the EVO system isn't made for the Mivec or with auto compatibility.

I don't think the Outlander is available in M/T, and the Ralliart's 5 speed doesn't have an output shaft for the transfer case. I'd either have to convert to the Outlander's A/T, or somehow get the EVO's 5 speed (or 6 speed ) in there with the transfer case. Not easy or cheap, in either case.
