Rough startup / Idol

I installed the RRM CAI about 200 miles ago. Within the last 100 miles when i start my car my engine kinda chugs a little bit, starts about 10 seconds after starting and lasts for about 10 seconds. Also yesturday my SES light came on. Everything appears to be fine in my engine.... My MAF is screwed down tight and both ends of my intake are tight. I'm taking it to the dealer later today if nobody can come up with an answer for me. I never drive the car very hard, it only has like 910 miles on it... If you had a similar problem please drop in your .02 cents. It would be very much appreciated.

I haven't installed my CAI yet, but supposedly an ECU reset and driving it hard for 10 min for the ECU to remap should help.

Is it a rough startup/American Idol?

Did you unplug your battery before installing the CAI? It's sometimes a good idea to do that to let the ECU reset itself to 'understand' the increased airflow. I would try disconnecting the battery for 10 min, and see if that helps any.

The rough idle is normal for our cars, the CAI just makes it a bit more noticeable. I'm not sure what causes it, but it's only on cold starts, so maybe it tweaks the timing or A/F or something to make the engine easier to start, then switches it back after a few seconds. As long as it smoothes out after 10-15 seconds you're fine.

What he said. If you watch/listen on a cold start, it'll run rough for 10-15 seconds, then the revs will blip up, and drop down to where they should be, and the idle will smooth out. Mine's done that since it was new, still does it at 35k. Totally normal.

Just an Update incase any of you run into the problem, The Check Engine light came on because the car sat in a blacktop parking lot all day and the intake was soaked with heat. The ECU diagnostic at the dealership said the Air/Fuel was thrown off because off the increase in heat.
I was also warned that my "Air Induction System" could cause my Cat to "explode" from change in air temp and air flow. I was like rofl K. Gimmie my keys now.

Good to hear it was nothing serious.

Just a warning, though....those dealerships love to void warranties because of 'warnings' given out. Not to say that any problems will develop with an intake (rarely), but in the off-chance that one may occur, watch out for your dealer to start acting shady!

I'd be really interested in hearing their scientific explanation for this phenomenon.

He seemed to have a rather low IQ. He mentioned something about there being platinum enfused with dense foam that can get dislodged from the airflow and then jam the pipe and make you loose horsepower then the whole cat explodes. Then he was like
"i dont know why you would just put on a cold air induction, i heard you dont get any horse power unless you combine that with a new computer and an exuast system..... Yah.... ya should have just saved up and bought it all at once"
I was all like sorry i dont have $1000 to lay down all at once.

You should have played along and asked him about the halogen headlight fluid you've heard about.

As soon as I installed my RRM CAI I noticed the rough startup/Idol also. After about 500 miles it doesn't do it as much. But very normal and its nothing really to worry about. Also, when I installed the RRM CAI, there was no CEL, but after about 2 days it came on. I unscrewed the MAF and tightened it, and drove out of my garage and it went out. Nothing really to worry about, just make sure there is no leak in the MAF
