Any more info on your ride?
Mine shows $8650 for a good condition 2004 ES with 17k miles and just the convenience pacakage, that sounds about right though for yours.

14 for a trade in??? You must have ten miles on the car. Because when mine had 14000 on it about 8 months ago, it was worth around 11,500 give or take a little.

I work in an insurance t/l dept... I can tell you that KBB for a trade-in at a dealership is NOT GOING TO HAPPEN...
KBB is used by people that give you the loan, that's why it's higher (so they can charge more/make more on the interest, etc...)

You might want check out www.emdunds.com evaluate it as a used vehicle & click on "appraise a car" & get the TMV (True Market Value)
Input your information on the car & rate it as you want although "average" would be ideal, because most won't rate it higher than that!

Then take the private party & dealer retail & get the average... (Add the two up & then divide the sum by "2")

That's more realistic than KBB... Mine: $11,599

And that still seems high...

Both Edmunds and KBB are just a guide to give people and idea of what trade in's and such are worth.

Dealers use Manhiem auctions when they appraise your trade. They see what they can buy one for at the auction, and take it from there.

close...they use NADA for true book value. new books are released every month. they use manhiem with NADA to get an accurate number on regional value. for example, NADA may say a BMW is worth 30k, but in our area there's no market for 30k used cars so at the auction they're only bringing 20k. one way to justify ****in somebody on a trade haha. if you want the true value of that car, go to NADA.com, or look up an NADA book. that's what banks and dealerships use. KBB and Edmunds are decent, but can be way off sometimes. NADA is the correct book. that's about right for that car tho, they don't hold value well at all. especially if an 04 is already worth less than 9k. mitsu's with the exception of the evo have terrible resale values. just as an example, my 99 civic Si with 78k on the clock is worth more than that 04 lancer lol

just stating the facts. explaining car values and how they're determined, like the guy asked. best way to show him how fast his car is losing it's value is to compare it to another car.

Not to long ago I saw an Evo at a used car lot, called "Carmax," or some $hit like that. I figured that I would see what would happen if I try and trade my car in for the Evo So I go inside and it is really different than any other dealership I have ever been to. What they do is they take your car and they put a plastic number on top of the roof. Then they have one of their guys take your car to their service department to do an inspection of the car. So, I was like, "what the hell," I dont give a $hit as long as I get to drive the Evo. Anyway to make a long story short, after test driving an Evo and an S2000 (at top speeds!!) The sales guy comes back and goes through all of the bull$hit crap that he has to go through and tells me that they are going to give me 8200 for my car, w/ 20000 mi. I was like fu#@ that and left. Before I leave, he tells "well, if you could magically come up with 12,000 maybe we can work something out." I felt insulted and walked out without response. Lancers dont really hold their value that well, unless you have an Evo.

That could be right... because I handle the insurance end of valuating veh's & we do it differently than banks & dealers...
However, I would think they couldn't just use NADA, becuase first off, it's not every month... if you look on the cover sometimes there's a range... like the February NADA Book is good from Feb. 01 - March. 31st...
Also they have "older autombile books" that don't even take into consideration mileage deductions on veh's older than 1996...???
Not trying to question what you've said... just verifying... Since this info could be VERY helpful to me when someone complains about their total loss & I can explain why I am offering something different than what they paid/will pay to replace!

My '05 Civic Si is worth less than 14K and it has 3,000 miles on it. It depends.

You seem to be stating many facts... like the time you said that Lancers are all crappy cars...
