I'm not sure how tight the seals are, but getting any gunk in the valves/head would be very bad. Enough buildup on the timing belt itself might effect timing. If its just for looks, i wouldnt do it. get a clear cam gear cover fabd if u want to see the timing stuff =) if ur testing something, dont be lazy and put the cover on between test runs.

the seals should be very tight......I took the cam cover off when I had my Probe, with no problems. You would risk something getting up there and damaging the timing belt.....which on a zero interference engine is VERY BAD.

I would look for an acrylic cover......which sounds interesting to me.

The Evo guys get the clear cam gear cover here: www.ZakleeCorp.com (that's me )

By the way, it's polycarbonate, not acrylic.

Don't run without one - expensive consequences may follow, and unfortunately I know this from experience. Dudes with Evos that run without the cover are living dangerously.

I don't have any plans for making one for the Lancer. Is there a lot of interest?

If the price was the same i'd be up for it.

I'd also be up for a set of cam gears like the one in the pic. Hehe

Not meaning to get OT here but would lightend cam gears have any benefit? I'm just thinking about reducing rotating mass on the engine. Kind of like the crank pulley thing.

i'd be down at $75. i mean, we only have 1 cam to cover, so it takes less 'polycarbonate' less poly = less $, right?

ummm....you mean cam GEAR, right? If that fits on the 4G63 (Evo), it will not fit on the 4G69 (RA). Looks cool, though.

Robert5995: Any plans for us RA guys?

I doubt you'd notice a difference, even on a dyno. The crank pulley is made to be kinda heavy. The cam gear is already pretty light.
