Rear Windsheild Wiper? Possible or not?
Rear Windsheild Wiper? Possible or not?
Alright, i searched, didn't come up with much of a solution other than some people asking about it and others responding with "i don't know" or "try searching" or "never been tried", but my question is as follows:
What's the chance of getting a Evo Rear Windsheild Wiper on a 04-05 Lancer? I mean i live in boston, and when i have the rear defogger on it's pretty useless cause i still have to get out to get the snow/ice off the windsheild and a rear wiper would take care of this without a problem. Yes i know it could end up with a costly and "not-worth it" ending but i'm just testing the waters.
I know our back window isn't standard glass and might react different cause it's curved should i try to cut it... But what do you guys think of the idea, any suggests would be much appreciated. If you're just going to bash on the idea, and say it's pointless don't bother posting up. Otherwise thanks in advance for reading and replying

I've been thinking about this for a while too. i think it would be beneficial to a lot of people, especially people in a snowy climate.
Is our rear window the same size/shape as the evo window?? we should definitely try to get more info about this.

well i know the angle of the rear windsheild for the evo is steeper than that of the lancer so i dont' think it'd be compatable. As far as wipe compatibility, i think any rear windsheild wiper that resembles the lancer's one will fit... As far as wiring goes, it shouldn't be too hard, i would rather wire it up to a button instead of the windsheild wiper controls. I saw in another tread about this topic (based on standard 02-03 lancers) that some wanted to wire it up to work with the front windsheild wipers but i find that it wouldn't be beneficial to have both of them run when you're trying to clean just your front windsheild, it might actually cause damage to the back windsheild should it be dry and there be debris on the wiper...
I think that it wouldn't matter if the window is curved or not. if you look at most rear window wipers they are pretty small because of the fact that the glass is curved so much. as long as you don't have a problem cutting holes in your body, and don't want a 20 inch wiper, I think this is very possible
the only question here is.
Will it be possible to cut the rear glass without cracking it and causing future problems?
That's the only problem. Yeah, it would be good and beneficial, especially for us Northerners and would be great to have especially if it had its on switch.
The only real question is reliability of the glass, once its cut. Your best bet is to go to a glass specialist and ask them about it. once you have a strong reliable hole, then the installation and wiring would be easy.

I would think that there are kits for universal rear wipers that don't require glass cutting but that would be mounted on the car somehow. I am not positive though. just an idea for you interested guys to check out

Check with a glass shop like Ziebart's and see if there's any reason why a hole couldn't be put in the stock rear glass (I don't see why not as long as it's done correctly). Have the hole put in, buy an Evo rear wiper unit, then do the wiring yourself, shouldn't be too difficult.
First off i wouldn't cut a hole in the stock rear glass, the glass is temperd and if it brakes, it shatters into pieces, it would be way easyer to swap a stock glass and wiper motor from and evo. and besides if you look in your trunk under the rear parcel shelf, the wire is already there for the wiper system, i found out that the manufactur pre-wires the cars, incase they are needed to install the wiper option. But cutting a hole in the stock glass is not a good idea.

All windows (front, rear, and sides) on US cars have a layer of laminate between two layers of glass that keeps it from shattering into pieces. It'll just spiderweb out, but hold together. If you don't believe me, take a baseball bat to your window and you'll see.
That wire under the rear deck is for the 3rd brake light on the ES model. Unless there's another plug under there that I don't know about. No reason to prewire the Lancers with a rear wiper control when it's not an option and not the same body as the Evo.

i do have a question though. what kind of switch would be used to make this work?? is there anything w/ a delay timer or something like that? or possibly a speed variance?
o...and about the whole curved glass thing.....look @ the 2nd gen eclipses, there was some pretty curved glass on the rear there, and they had wipers.
