Question for synthetic oil users

I am using Mobil 1 synthetic in my RA and have been since 6,000 km's... Problem is my car seems to be using a lot of oil. I will change the oil and at the next change it will be below the low line (barely but still below it). I have it scheduled to be checked on Saturday but has anyone else had this problem before or know what could be wrong? Thanks

What's your oil change interval? How many miles or kilometers do you have now? Is it burning it, or leaking it?

If it's burning it, your piston rings might not have seated themselves all the way yet, or your valve stem seals aren't sealing, or something like that.

If it's leaking, well, you should know what to do.

My car has also been fed Mobil 1 since early on. I have over 58,000 miles now (dang, almost 100,000 kilometers ), and change my oil every 5000 miles. I checked at the last oil change, and it had used about 1/4 of a quart. I was expecting more, but I'm very happy with that.

I change every 6,000 km's (recommended for severe driving or w/e they call it) and my car only has 24,000 km's on it. Hopefully I can get something done about it. Oh and its not leaking it, I park on my driveway day after day all night and nothing on there.

An engine using 1 quart of oil between changes is still what they'd call normal.

This is not the first time that an issue like this has been posted on evom. Basically, from a rather old thread, there appears to be no scientific reason why the synthetic stuff should be detrimental to your engine.

There are claims that the synthetic is too thin. This is IMO total bs. My reasons being that I the viscosity grades and data sheets show that their viscosities (both kinds) are very close (for a given rating). While I am not about to argue about this, I would say that if you find your current synthetics too thin, perhaps you should try a different viscosity grade (higher).

My DC5 (now sold) consumed a great deal more of 0W40 than it did 10W40. In both cases, the rate at which it consumes this oil is quite significant, but then again, it does get revved up to 8000rpm on a very regular basis cos it's pretty weedy anywhere else in the range.

Well, whatever you have to put in there when you replace the lost oil is what the amount is between the low and full marks on the dipstick.

I had the same problem with mobil 1. The last time I changed oil I switched to Quaker state synthetic 5-30, I just checked my oil this morning before I left for work, the oil is still up to the full line with 2000 miles since the last change. wal-mart has the best price on it, at least they do here in MN. I am sticking with that brand.

I switched to Royal Purple with my last change and I like it so I'm just gonna stick with that.

The amount of oil between the low and full lines on the dipstick is 1 quart of oil. So, it looks like you are using a little bit over that. The dealership will tell you that it is normal.

Hells ya bro...Ive been using royal purple since 25,000kms and I have almost 90,000kms....it doesn't burn or blow any oil. Very satisfied with royal purple..car seems to wanna be driven harder. I ran mobil 1 before making the change to royal purple....a few people said " just try it, you wont wanna go back to mobil 1" and I haven't.

I change my oil every 3-4000 miles, mainly cause i want to keep the engine in tip top condition and well.. i get oil from work so no worries on paying much for it. Mobil 1 synthetic since 3000 miles out of the dealership. Everytime i change my oil i realize i burn up about 1/4 to 1/5 of a quart. My uncle's a mechanic and said it's fine, the way i drive at least... but to just keep an eye on it.

Does anyone lose power steering fluid though? Mines is a bit low for some reason, noticed it a week ago..

Were you losing as much as I am before you switched?

There is absolutly no reason to lose power steering fluid. Check for leaks.
