Limited Slip?
Limited Slip?
Ok, I know RRM has a limited slip, but its cost is more than any other LS I have ever bought... Are there any other options out there?
And as a thought, how come nobody has made a insert that operates like a wedge in the differential case to put more pressure on the side gears and thus acting as a limited slip of sorts... I have used these in VWs and Hondas before with good results...

The company that does that can make you one upon request, but it's not a true LSD, the way I understand it, it acts more like a closed diff. And the RRM LSD USED to be $899. I don't know what technological innovations occured to cause it to jump up to $1300, that's crazy expensive.
I think they had two options, the better one being $1300, and now they just offer the higher end one.
I can't stand driving my car in the winter, if I don't get a LSD in the car before next fall its going by by.

Cusco also have an LSD... I was talking to RPW about this not so long ago...
the type of weld a plate in there is a old fashioned way of doing it and is probably considered to be very ghetto you would certainly want to have a lot of faith in the person putting the plate in I would hate to imagine what would happen if it came loose..

Im not talking about a welded or spooled differential... I run those in my rockcrawlers and they are very different... Even a ratcheting locker is very different... The ones I've used in other cars were two pieces of high grade tool steel/machine steel... They had a half moon machined into the middle of each piece to fit the crosspin of the differential though... between the two pieces of steel were very heavy springs that put pressure on the side gears... This pressure could be adjusted with shims... Similar to this:

Basically it drops into your stock carrier, not replacing it completely with another LS carrier...
I have seen guys shim the side gears in a stock open differential as well to get a little more bite on traction... This method pushs the side gears closer to the spider gears, creating more pressure on the unit and not allowing it to spin as easily... Not a true LS but it does help a little on the cheap...
Maybe when I replace my clutch i'll tear into mine and see if I can modify an existing hond/vw unit to work in the stock case....

Sidenote: I do not recommend welding a FWD differential unless its strictly a drag car of off-road use only... You'll never be able to turn on a solid surface without something giving ie: tires/axles

The linked Limited Slip above is a driveable Modification... I was refering to Welding/Spooling a differential as not being a street friendly modification... Just wanted to clear that up before more people got confused...

These guys can make one that will work in the Lancer if you ask, but you'll have to pay more.
thats what I was looking for... I bet even a little extra cost involved it wouldn't cost $1300... I would think $3-600 would be more reasonable on this type of unit if it had to be reworked to fit the lancer...

I emailed those guys some time ago (almost a year) for a RA P-grip....no reply so far! Good luck with em!
Well, i just sent them a message this morning... if I can get one thats within tolerance, yet needs some machining, I can make it work... I just need to know my current crosspin size, case Diameter, and side gear spacing.... I'll have to tear into it and get out the calipers... I noticed on their site that all the Mitsu-products use the same part number and that the intructions say to machine down the side gears a bit... May be a one-size fits all kinda deal with a little machine work...
I'll let you know what happens... If they have a decent return policy maybe i'll just order one that would appear close (ie mitsu part number) and if there is no way it will work, ill send it back... Honestly though, ive been in alot of differentials, and I can't imagine not being able to make it work...
I've got a sweet deal going on the limited slip differentials but I only have a few of these so check it out. It's a good LSD
