Valve adjustment
Valve adjustment
I took my car in to get checked because i heard a ticking noise comming from the engine bay. They told me i needed to replace the exhaust downpipe and it was covered by waranty so everything was fine and dandy, until i drove it away only to hear the same sound. I then went back and now they told me i need a valve adjustment which is not covered by waranty.
Anyone else had this problem, does this sound right or are they missing something, thanks, Muck

And to be clear, this shouldnt be covered by warranty?

Not a warranty issue, it's part of your car's scheduled maintenence. It's rather simple to do, just don't drop anything down into your engine.
The tool can be found on amazon.com

When you take off the valve cover, is there a gasket for it?? I dont mean to go off topic, but I had a question about the "diy valve adjustment." You are just adjusting the valves that are closed, right?? I am kind of lost on what to do and I would rather do it myself. It would be much appreciated if someone would give me a quick walk through. I have already looked at the link above. Thanks guys!!
There's really not a gasket. The valve cover has a rubber seal all around it that's built in. Also, you're correct, you're only adjusting the valves that are closed. Rotate the crankshaft until either cylinder 1 or 4 are at TDC (use the timing mark on the pulley), adjust all the valves that are closed (if there's play in the rocker, then it's closed). Once they're all adjusted, rotate the crankshaft one full rotation, then you can adjust the other 1/2 of the valves.
Well I did them today... to be honest, it was harder then I thought. First of all, I found it to be easier with a separate wrench and screwdriver then that jamnut tool. The exhaust side was pretty easy to get to, but the intake side was a major PITA! Deff get some feeler gauges that are bent at an angle. I have the straight ones which caused me to burn my hand several times on the block trying to get a gauge in there.
Oh well, at least they are done. My valves were actually not that much off. I'd prob pay to have it done next time.
