i know that the beauty is that u can shift wenever u want, i just wanted to see what others did just for peice of mind
if im at 3k-3.5k rpm and i shift up to a higher gear to keep that same speed i will shift to a higher gear therefore in that new gear i will be about 2.5k. but for me when driving to work im in 5th gear most of time at 3.5k the whole way. i dont know if this makes sense but i hope it helps.
but as i said before i do most by sound of the engine and the feel of the car. ill check it out more tommorow and tell you what i find about my normal driving.

I'm not the most fuel efficient of drivers, though I can be if I chose, I don't normally take off as fast as I can at every opportunity, but I don't take my time either.
The beauty of a manual is changing to what gear you want when you want - I drive a 12 ton truck a bit at work, its usually pretty important to go through the gears in order for that thing - if you want to go 1, 2, 5 in a car, then go for it. So long as its not particularly uphill our car does quite well starting in second and you can stay in it a fair while too. I don't look at the tach too much, if you can't tell about where you are and when you are getting close to redlining without looking... then turn down the radio, remove your foam rubber cocoon and go out and get to know your car.
If the engine is warm and you aren't revving the hell the out of it like a teenager showing off - you should have nothing to fear
If you have a MIVEC engine, why avoid the higher RPM's and its potential? (besides that it inhales fuel like Barney Gumble drinking from the beer tap then) its a fun machine, lifes short, enjoy!

This is how the shifts should go for daily driving (not limited to and also may vary depending on weather conditions etc, style of driving)
1st gear: 2500 rpm
2nd gear: 2850rpm - 2900rpm
3rd gear: 3000 rpm
4th gear: 2900 rpm
Someone once posted this and I tried it, and I think its the best rpms to shift at.
