Update: well, you are not alone. I just went to the dealership to have it looked at. The told me the same thing "it's normal".

Well if it was normal, my car would be doing the same thing since I bought it over a year ago. I told them it's not normal, because I have never seen my car do that since I got it. They won't do anything because it's not causing 'detrimental' problems. So I guess I just need to watch for the first sign of overheating.

I am going to try reseting the ECU, not because I think it will fix it, but I am out of frickin ideas

Hey all,

Thought I would dredge up an old thread just for fun...

Update: same problem, took my car back to the same dealer that said it was 'normal'. This time, instead I drove right into the service bay, turned the car off, jumped out and grabbed the first guy that was there. I said 'hear that? (fan was going crazy), that doesn't sound normal to me' he was like, 'yep I hear it' (probably a little startled at my antics).

Oh, and just to brighten my day, one of the only 3 Evos in town, were in the bay next to me. It is something else to actually drool over one in person.

Anyways, I said the fan is running constantly, less than 2 hrs later I was driving out with a new fan control module' havent heard the problem since

So for anyone with the same problem, I recommend the above. Thumbs up to Platinum Mitsu for their help this time

So, you recommend people drive right into a service bay, jump out of your car yelling and grabbing the closest person to you?

Enjoy getting mass-tackled by people

Yepsiree. I figured rolling up, leaning on the horn, hanging out the window with the bullhorn yelling was bit overdoing it

What I meant was drive up and have someone look at it right away when you arrive (assuming the car is warmed up from the drive over). My fan would not act up until about 15-20 minutes of str8 driving.

Last time I went, the 15-25 minute wait at the dealer was sufficient enough to cool the engine and negate the problem by the time someone looked at it. Then they only drove around 10 minutes and could not re-create the problem. Leading to the 'no problem here' solution.

This time it worked out well, and they knew/could see exactly what I was talking about. It's all good

Sorry to stir up a dead thread guys, but I'm without my warranty since i'm riding about 45K miles on my engine. Anyone know if this might be covered still since its a known faulty part?

Must be nice. Hyatt Mitsu told me that they scanned it and noticed nothing, and since the fans weren't acting up when they did the oil I was SOL. They proceeded to tell me they don't get paid to look for problems unless they're apparent when they happen to look at it. While I understand they don't want to waste time chasing red herrings, there's a point when the whole warranty process becomes a joke.

When my car was doing this, my Emissions lights were flashing on the OBDII scanner. I can tell when my fans are going haywire the car is low on power also. It's had poor mileage right from day one, and these fans didn't take long to get to the stage where they're at. I'm curious as to whether the fan control puts the ECM into a limp mode (no CEL though).

The scanner manual recommends going thru a "drive cycle" when these emissions lights are blinking but that doesn't help. It's almost certainly related to the fans, I'm sure.

At any rate, any of these 05 RA's being fixed under a recall?
Maybe I'll go talk to Norm at Platinum.

my wife has an 05 outlander... same problem... we get to a light or hell even shut the vehicle off it sounds like the fan rpms spun up by about 10 times what they normally were...

there is a recall for the fan controller unit... same engine 4g69 as the RA so I don't see why the recall wouldn't be on the engine not the vehicle... tell them about the recall on the outlander and say your RA has the same engine they should fix it for free.. they did that to our outlander.. they had it for 2 days cuz we had an ABS ghost in our ECU... buts thats another topic...

they said it takes about 3hrs to change the fan controller if they have parts on-hand and don't have you come back another day after they order parts...

regardless of warranty its a known recall on the outlander 4g69 so it should be covered as a recall on our engine as well... but I guess each stealership is different...

Thought I'd update the thread.
I recorded my incidents on my camera phone and took the car back. Even though the problem ceased as I drove up (murphy's law eh?) the service crew figured if it was enough for me to go through that trouble they'd change out the fan relay. I think they also decided that if the new relay didn't fix the problem they'd bill me. Well, it was fixed so I guess they sent a memo back to Mitsu with the faulty relay.

I also have had this problem. It is the fan controller and apparently there was a recall for this issue as well. I didn't qualify for the recall so I had to get a new fan controller out of my own pocket. However once we switched it out I had no more fan running out of random.

Odd thing is I have two other factors that played in to this for me.
- My intake charge pipe for my turbo rubs against my fan controller causing huge "dents" in my controller.
- Apparently my turbo makes too much heat in the winter time even though I don't hit boost driving to work, it has never seen boost in the cold winter times, maybe a few times after it was at working temperatures.
