Don't go cheap on timing belts. Doesn't have the timing belt tensioner, either, which is a good idea to replace. That's the expensive part ($90 online). When I did mine, I replaced the two belts and the tensioner. The tensioner bearings were still in great shape so I won't replace those until 120k.

Sorry for off topic...

Otter, the tensioner cost $90? The part I broke in my other thread? Is that a Mitsu OEM part?

Timing belt tensioner, not the accessory belt tensioner. I'm trying to find the part # for that now.

I would go with OEM. I haven't really seen any aftermarket timing belts for our cars that look like they're an improvement, just the cheap knock-offs you get at autoparts stores. We can't get cool kevlar belts like the Evo guys.

Weird, CAPS doesn't have a part number for the tensioner you need, Arith. However, www.mitsubishiparts.com has it on their site for $86 + ship. MSRP is $116.

I know for a fact that you can get the timing belt from autoparts stores and I dont think that GATES is a cheap brand. I know they make a timing belt kit for our cars but dont remember how much it costs.

Why did you change the tensioner Otter?? Did it need changing becuase I thought it was just the belts at 60k miles we needed to change. I plan on doing it myself and just buying the parts.

I changed the tensioner because it's a super critical part that can wear out. The tensioner is a glorified spring, and if it doesn't hold the timing belt at the right tension, it could jump a tooth. I don't mind spending the $90 for peace of mind.

I agree, any time you have the timing belt system apart you should replace any normal wear parts.

Whats the price on the bearings otter, not worth it?

Actually, not that much. Around $20 each? I don't recall the exact number.

hrrrm, seeing as how I have a free timing belt and related parts voucher I will probably buy anything I can't get them to put on under "related parts" anyway, but $20 isn't bad at all. is our water pump in the same area as the timing belt? I am at work or I could answer that myself. I have about 15k till the belt change so I need to start thinking about all the odds and ends I can throw on. It's an awful lot of free labor to waste.

If you read the auction it comes with both belts and both tensioners, but as far as quality i don't know.

It comes with a balance belt tensioner, but not the timing belt one. It comes with the timing belt tensioner bearing.
