RRM motor mount question...
RRM motor mount question...
i was just looking for some feedback as far as what people who have these think about them. i know they are great for reducing wheel hop and probably give back a little bit of the lost power due to engine movement but i wanted feedback as far as regular ride quality...i have a friend with a focus svt and he has motor mounts and says that the cabin vibrations are rediculous, he said it feels like as if a set of subs are hitting weak during idle alone. i was really planning on picking these up for my next mod but if it results in an umcomfortable ride then i might have to pass.
and another quick question. i see some people with the NSC engine damper, what exactly is that and what is its purpose? is it to reduce engine movement but on a not as direct level as motormounts?

^Exactly. It still reduces engine movement, but it's a little more forgiving since the stock mounts can still move a little. But imo prone to break or bend judging from the feedback from others snapping and bending bolts... Maybe that was an older version, but they don't seem to hold up as well as a solid mount would.
I've had RRM mounts now for over a year and honestly can say the vibration transfer to the cabin is barely noticeable. On a cold start first thing in the morning, yeah there's a little shake, but for the rest of the day, nothing. It makes a very noticeable difference, like you're more connected to the car, but in a good way.
I recommend them. The front one is pretty easy to change, but I had RRM change my back one when they installed the new clutch.
Buy that, the first month it will transfer vibration but like Retro said. They will settle in the first month and maybe you'll get little vibration on cold start but it's gonna be perfect all day long... my fiancee wasn't agree at first but now she's okay.
Also, no one is selling the torque damper any longer. At least I haven't been able to find the NSC product anywhere. Anyone know any different about this? I have the motor mounts and they are great. I've been told by some that a combination of the two would be the best, but the mounts work great.
getting the motor mounts and dampner is just stilly. The mounts stops everything. You need nothing else. The dampner is always a half assed way to stop engine movement. When u get the dampner, the motor still moves, it just absorbs the shock so you done feel it in ur car. It still moves. The only way to STOP the motor is to get the mounts. And like everybody said, you'll only notice it for a little bit the fisrt month. I had mine for about 2 years now and i dont even notice it AT ALL. Like that said, when u start ur car up and its a cold start, it'll rev at 1000 rpms. When the rpms dips to regular idle, thats when u feel the motor vibrate a bit for like a second or so. Daily driving you dont notice the vibration at all after time. And the only other time u might notice the vibration is when u stall out. Or even when u come close to stalling out, the motor will jerk pretty bad and u'll feel it.
Motor mounts - Great mod, small vibration (not noticable after a month)
Dampner - Well, yea if you want to beat around the bush about it. Not recommended
Both - waste of money

+1, and I will add that if you are modifying your car permanently you should go with the mounts. If you are only doing stuff that you can remove for resale then the easy way out is the damper. it's really a half-assed way to control the engine movement, and is much less efficient than replacing your front and rear mounts. think about it this way, you have four connections to the chassis from the engine. you can add one stiff mounting point and since the engine only rolls back and forth and not side to side under acceleration it will help, but all four of your other mounting points are still loose. your engine will still move around, just a little less. if you replace two mounting points with stiffer mounting points, you have effectively removed the possibility of these mounting points shifting around. you car will then only be able to move as much as these new mounts allow forward and backward. with the damper alone the front and rear mounts will still move significantly, just at different angles due to the fifth mounting point.
even with hardened mounts you will still see you engine move, but when you look at the difference between stock and hardened mounts it really surprises you. I had forgotten how much movement there is with the stock mounts until this weekend. the race option here would be solid metal mounts, but that transfers so much vibration to the car it would shake it apart eventually. like I said, race option.
the biggest difference I noticed as far as performance wasn't wheel hop or shifting in the corners, it was reaction time from a stop. after you put the mounts in all of the engine power is transfered to the road immediately, the car just kind of scoots out from under you. before it would kind of adjust itself and begin to take off, now it just squats down and lunges forward.
