mental problems...pros and cons of a tranny swap

well, if you dont know, i have an automatic RA, and well, im really starting to get irritated cause when someone get in my car or they see my car, they either have to comment it saying why didnt you get a stick, or your car is slow cause its an automatic, im constantly getting flack for it, and im getting tired of telling people that i didnt have the option of getting a manual RA...i know, alot of you will either tell me to be happy with what ive got, and trust me, i am very greatful i even have it, cause i could still be driving my old 91' integra (POS might i add) or even worse...a kia....(*SHUTTERS IN FEAR AND DISGUST*) anyways, i have been highly considering doing a tranny swap, and yes i know some of you will just tell me to buy an RA thats a manual, but i dont have the money, and i have gotten attached to my ride (as lame as that sounds its true) and i dont wanna give it up, so i was pondering, either getting a RA 5speed kit with somewhat low mileage, or...ORRRR if possible an MR 6speed tranny, i know that sounds rediculous, but i was just wondering what the pros and cons are about the whole tranny swapping...
well im dont with my rant and rave...thanks for listening....

I assume it would be fairly straight forward. Just get the right parts from a salvage and work it in.

However, I would suggest getting a Service manual as I'm not sure very many people if any have done a tranny swap considering how new the car still is.

It'll be expensive, plain and simple. If you can't afford to replace the car, you sure as hell can't afford a tranny swap. Plus, it's not something the typical weekend warrior should be taking on. It'll require numerous big ticket items (trans, clutch, ecu, wiring harness), and then you'll be nickel and dime'd to death on the small bits.

you need to remember that we are not in the early 80's anymore, swapping auto to manual doesn't simply mean changing a few rods and bolts.

A part from all of the hard work cutting in the engine bay and other stuff to let the cables go you will have the ECU and wiring headache.

Basically, your car will not start if you just put the manual tranny in without changing the ECU. You will have to swap ECU and maybe some part of the wiring harness to have it work.

I would be ready to spend somewhere between 3 and 5 k to do this kind of conversion.

by the way, I don't know where you will find a 6 speed Evo tranny as EVO guys must already be killing each others for those rare 6 speed ones.

For that price I would go buy a nice 5 speed old sport car like Mr2, Eclipse or Rx7and keep the auto RA for daily drive.

Oh yeah, forgot to add that automatics usually have a different gear ratio in the axle. So, you'll probably want to swap that too.

I know the 5spd's are
1st: 3.583:1
2nd: 1.947:1
3rd: 1.379:1
4th: 1.030:1
5th: 0.820:1

anyone know the ratio's for the 4spd auto?

I was thinking about the axle. Of course the auto and manual may have the same axle gearing so I'm probably just talking BS.

Everything is contained within the trans, so the swap would include the final drive gear and such.

yeah from the sounds of it, i should probably just suck it up and deal with it, it just make me sad when me and my buddies 08 gts go heads up, sometimes he'll tail me and i pin it and have a hard time pulling away from him, and he's stock...so maybe i can just make it an all motor monster, maybe thatll make me happy, iwant a turbo but everyone i ever talk to says it would be a waste of money and a turbo cause i wouldnt be able to control the shifting and all that crap...i guess i could just save up and get the 2jz i want and build that up...

by the way from what I've seen here and there, auto cars are better with turbos as there is less turbo lag because of the way the tranny shifts between gear.

For the money, you can just trade in your RA for another one..depends on how much you owe... just get another one that looks near identical to it, it will be ackward at first, but then u wont know the dif.

P.S. That is if you are REALLY attached to it
