all I know is you get what you pay for...It doesn't sound like that's a price from the dealer. I need my belt replaced too and I picked up the part from Advanced. I'm prolly gonna get a mitsu tech to install it because it's a PIA and they know what they're doing..
But it would prolly be around 500-600 at the dealer..

I just changed my timing belt about 2 weeks ago, IIRC the belt was ~$58, balance belt ~$35ish, water pump $180. I installed everything myself to save money, if you ask me a days work at home in the garage is worth the extra 300+ in your pocket.

If you don't know what you are doing, then pay the $389. I paid a little bit more to have the timing belt in my 02 Lancer done. It was worth it.

That seems like a good price from a dealer. Ive been quoted well over that from lilttle garages. Id go for it!

I dont want to hi-jack but is should the water pump also be replaced at this time?

Well put it this way.. do you want to wait till 120K to do your waterpump and risk it failing on its way there... orrr... pay additional labor to rip out all the belts all over again when your waterpump starts to go.

In order to do your waterpump you have to pull half the stuff out that you'll need to pull for the timing belt, might as well do it while you're in there...

exactly why i changed my water pump at the same time as my timing belt, if i knew there was gonna be this much questioning about it, i should've just kept my laptop at my side and done a write up on the whole thing

Yeah...Thanks...well I am at 55k and I am getting scared about it breaking on me soon because I travel a lot on the Highway back and fourth for miles at a time. I just dont want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere and I also dont want my whole engine to get messed up. I really dont have the money to do it right now. I should do the whole job ASAP though right.

Meh, I still think changing the water pump at 60k is a waste of money. We don't drive DSMs and our cars don't have the pump failure issue that theirs did.

And yes, if you're at 55k, you should change your belts in the near future. It's due every 60k. It won't snap right at 60k, but it's not something you want to put off.
