New Car, Loud Noises

Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago I bought a 06' Ralliart, and I would have to say that I enjoy driving this car very very much!

The one concern I have is that the motor knock a lot and almost sounds like a diesel. I have checked the oil many times but it has not gone lower. The sound is not getting any louder either.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

ummm. . . if you are hearing a knock from the engine then something is amiss and I would NOT be driving it until it is checked out.

If you want to keep it alive, have a qualified mechanic check it out.

do you here knocking or just really loud ticking? because my 04 ralliart ticks really loud at idle. In my case it is just the lifters. A valve lash adjustment will fix it.

It is more of a ticking than a knocking. Its noticeable at idle, loudest around 2500, and above 3300 I cant really hear it.

ya that is exactly what mine is like. I personally have just gotten use to it. Not sure if it means the engine is dying or if that is normal. Hope someone with some knowledge can give some input.

Ralliarts need to have the valves adjusted about every 45k miles. It says to do it at 30K but for most that is overkill. There are some good how to's on this board or any competent mechanic should be able to do it for relatively cheap. It will make the car quiet as new.

What he said. I actually had mine done by Mitsu themselves. Its only been 10K and its already back to being loud...So I'm saying F it for now. But my local Mitsu did it for 250 from what I've been seeing other dealers charge this seems like a good price!

The procedure for a valve adjustment is rather easy.

How to adjust valve lash

So far I've done everything on my car myself except for this. Honestly I'm scared to mess something up >_< And since I have the underdrive pulley, where am I supposed to do this
"Turn it CLOCKWISE by hand until the timing mark on the pulley lines up with the "T" on the timing cover."
Apparently there is no mark on the pulley?

@Darewood and Jabl3s:

Unless you've replaced the crank pulley you'll be fine. The RRM UDP is NOT what is being referred to in those instructions.

That being said, I'm about to attempt this myself soon (and replace all 4 struts and springs and spark plugs) so I'll let you know how it goes. Luckily my de-facto Brother-in-law is very mechanically inclined and is going to assist me.

My advice would be to get a friend who is a gearhead (or an acquaintance) and offer them a 12-pack to help you do it, then send them the link to the how-to and see if they think they could handle it. I bet you'll find it's easier than you first think.

Apparently you didn't do this part when installing the UDP (Hope you guys with Joe's pulley put some kind of mark on yours before installing it, like I did)

But doesn't the pulley only go on one way? I just ordered one so I don't know for sure. But if it only can go on one way, then you should be able to match up the stock pulley and get the timing mark set.

I can see how that would be an issue for someone who did not set the mark. I guess to be fair, I've set valve lash on my VW for the past 20 years, so it's not that scary to me. However, this is a rather easy process. All you are doing is setting the tolerance (lash) between the rocker head and the valve head.

Key note on valve lash, the loose lash = louder valve train and less power.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.
I have read the How to for the lash adjustment, and will try this in my next free afternoon, or have it done when I get my timing belt replaced.
