Help Me Understand Exhaust

The previous owner had a cat back (not sure what brand) on my 04 RA but I had to change the muffler to pass our Nova Scotia motor vehicle inspection (MVI). I now have a walker quietflow muffler. straight pipes aren't legal and muffler's won't pass "if you can stick a broom handle through them." It definitely doesn't sound as good anymore.

It sounds tinny when revved high because i have no resonator (do any cats have resonators?) the guys said it will probably quiet down after driven for a bit once some carbon builds up, but they gave me my old muffler in case i wanted to put it back on now that my car has passed MVI.

The tinny sound has died down a fair bit over a few weeks, but i'm wondering if i can expect it to quiet down much more. Also, I'm wondering what the process is like to put my old muffler on...i'm assuming it would need to be welded. I think the guys at midas had to cut the old muffler on and create a flange to fit the new one. Any help in understanding the exhaust system would be helpful. I been trying to read up on it as well to get a general understanding.

If I don't end up putting my old muffler on, is it something that is worth selling? It's just taking up room in my small 2 bedroom apartment right now.

they either welded the new muffler on or used exhaust clamps. either way the muffler they took off is going to be pretty useless to anyone so not worth selling. jack the car up and see how they secured it. if its clamped throw your other one on. if its welded (which it probably is) and you really want the old one on you can have the new muffler cut off and im sure a local shop can make 2 different exhaust clamps w/ different flanges (1 for the muffler for MVI and 1 forthe muffler for dailty use) this way you can swap out mufflers using a few bolts.

it might get quieter but your going to always have that "tin" like noise w/o resinators and a muffler like that.

it is a clamp...I checked last week. It looks kinda like a sleeve with two bolt things on each side of the pipe...so with that setup, i guess the muffler is just loosened then slipped off and on? ...and thanks for the info...

Nice that saves you alot of money then, im guessing its a reducer clamp? if not then just bolt your old one up. if it is a reducer clamp just stop by any local muffler shop and they can fab you a new clamp for your old muffler.

True, but there is a side effect of a lack of annual inspections. It seems like half the cars I see driving around here have their check engine lights on, one or more burned out bulbs (headlight, taillight, or turn signal) and rotted out exhaust pipes. Some have mismatched tires (not just brand/model, but SIZE ) and make ghastly noises when accelerating, turning, or braking.

It makes me laugh to think how valuable people in the Rust Belt think a Florida car is, just because the body isn't rusted through in several places. The average person here does not take care of their car as well as I'm used to seeing.

Sadly I agree , some people here really have no respect for their cars...

Thought i'd revive this thread instead of making a new one...

So the tinniness of my exhaust has been bothering me more and more lately. took it in and the mechanic said it will need to be cut with a new flange made and new hangars. This seems like an awful lot of trouble for something that won't pass our MVI in a year and a half.

So right now I have a catback (dunno which brand) with a walker quietflow muffler that's all tinny. I need some suggestions for a muffler that will provide a good sound since i don't have a resonator, that will also pass mvi. I'd like to get it locally, but there aren't really a lot of paces around here. Canadian Tire sells some cherry bomb and some magnaflow stuff, but i haven't taken a close look at what they have.

I'd like to do this as cheaply and as soon as possible, so please, if you could provide some help.

The other option I was thinking was just a resonated exhaust tip. Never knew anyone who had one though, so i'm not really sure how they sound.

try an OEM exhaust.
IMO it sounds nice inside and out, and will definitely pass the mvi.

maybe try going to a magic muffler.

there's a guy in my area that's parting out a 2004 lancer. Dunno if it's an RA or what, all i know is there's front end damage but the rest of the car is good, so i think he'll have the exhaust.

If it's an OZ or ES, will the stock exhaust fit my RA? Also, what would be a good price for the exhaust if I do decide to go this route? Thanks....

I signed up for a youtube account and posted my first video. Got my friend to rev it while i recorded. Got pretty smokey. Cold outside and the engine was cold. He said he doesn't know what it was revved to cause he wasn't watching. Anyway....here's what my exhaust sounds like...

^ This ha. The factory exhaust is a pretty decent sounding stock unit. My girl dropped me off at a buddies place the other day and she took off in a hurry, the stock exhaust actually surprised me at how well it sounded.. never heard it outside before til then

I don't think a factory oz/es exhaust will be a good idea, different nature of engines. I think the internal meausure of an oz/es exhaust is 1-7/8" and ours is 2-1/8" if I remember reading correctly?
